One of my checks were stolen. I don't know when or how. I keep them in a safe place so I thought. However I PERSONALLY know the person who stole it. This person has done it before to other family members but nothing has ever been done. However I don't want to take this sitting down. I am a single mom and although the money is not alot at this time. what if this person finds my checks again and tries to take me for more money. what happens to them? What do I do? Do I go to the bank? U can obviously see that this is NOT my signature.... (not sure why the bank would cash it either) But do I call the police? I'm very confused and not sure how to go about this. This has NEVER happened before... Please all advice is welcomed.. thank you again

increase the signture verification process. for eg, you need 2 person to sign the cheque before it can be cash out.

request limited amount to be cash out. for eg, talk to the bank if any cheque cash out action that is above XX amount, the bank must contact you for verbal approval.

call the police to investigate the cheating issue.

You will have to go to your bank and file an affidavit of forgery. The police or some arm of law enforcement will be contacted and will likely issue a warrant for the thief. The thief will likely be arrested sooner or later - when law enforcement catches up with them.

It is likely that the thief will not have the money to reimburse you.

The bank may resist reimbursing you and may even fight you in court - but it is worth a try to file a claim with them.

Most relatives do not go this far and take these many steps when they discover the thief is a relative.

I personally worked on a case (as a banker) where the son stole a few thousand from his father. When the father learned the consequences and circumstances of pursuing the money - he dropped the case.

I don't think you should drop this case - but I want you to know that the force of law will fall on the thief.
It is likely that some members of the family will criticize you even though you are doing the right thing.

Believe it or not - a great many cases that you hear about for identity theft and embezzling are performed by bad family members.

1. Signature verification is something bankers are trained on, specially for those in consumer banking or branch banking. If you say that the checks are encashed with a different signature, then you've got grounds to complain.

2. Banks have audit trails and CCTV cameras in case they need to verify your claim on the identity of your thief - it's easy to prove. You can throw the person in jail, easily.

take the check to the bank and have them look at the signature and show them that it is not yours and then let them take the actions that needs to be done . more than likely they will go to jail and will have to pay the money back or do jail time it is a felony.
good luck

You can call the bank and tell them a check was stolen. Tell them to stop payment on the check.

Ask the people at the bank what to do.
This is definately illegal, and not looked upon favorably. Your bank has a security department which will handle this.
