Newer cars have the cold coolant level stamped on the tank near the radiator cap, usually 1-1/2 or 2 " from the top. As the engine warms up and the coolant expands, it will expel the air and any excess will go to the reservoir.

All the way to the top. Right to where the radiator cap seals to the radiator.
