Here were some of the big headlines (this was a heavy India news year):
The US and the Vatican exhange diplomats (first time in 116 years)
Reagan pulls US Marines out of Beirut, Lebanon
Indira Ghandi was assassinated
USSR and other Soviet block nations pull out of the Olympics
The Union Carbide plant in India leaks toxic gas killing 2,000 and injurring 150,000
300 people slain when the Indian Army occupied the Sihk Golden Temple
Of course the biggest thing that didn't happen was George Orwell's nightmare version of the world in his book titled "1984", though there was plenty of talk about how close we were getting.

In 1948, right after WW2 and the "Iron Curtain", George Orwell wrote "1984", a dystopian novel about future England in 1984. He just did a play on the number "48", no other reason.

Well, that depends on where u were in 1984.In my home town of Amritsar in Punjab,India, the army invaded the Golden Temple(the holiest place for followers of the Sikh religion) and unleashed a chain of events that led to the assasination of the Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. That assasination in turn led to revenge killings of the Sikhs in many parts of India and resulted in loss of thousands of innocent livs.So from my perspective,it definitely was not a good year.
