When did we become such a selfish group of people? Numerous responses here are of the "I haven't lost any rights" basis - inferring that the rights of anyone else is not of thier concern.

Unfornuately, terrorists pre 9/11 were able to hide among us, under the umbrella of rights reserved for Americans. Prior to 9/11, the only battle's fought on American soil were agianst the British when gaining our independence, and against fellow Americans in the war for Southern independence.
Now the enemy has arrived at our shore. They have already took 3,000 innocent American lives and strive for more. They don't fight conventionally (out in the open with guns a blazing), no they are stealthy and hide / live among us. Conventional methods won't work! "One enemy within is worse than 200 at the gates" (Sun Tzu).
I would rather America be proactive, stop the terrror before it happens. By not enacting the patriot act, America can only be reactive. What good is that? damage is done at that point. Would it really matter if we caught the 19 highjackers after 3,000 lives were already taken? If your Al Qeada/ Hesbullah seems like a decent trade.
Sometimes sacrafices are made for the greater good. I don't like giving up any rights, None. However, There is an enemy out there who wants all Americans dead! They don't care what political party you belong too, or that your intentions are good. Nope, they want to cut your head off, just like they did to Nick Berg, and countless other American civilians caught over there. If your are not Muslim, you must die. But I don't think even being Muslim would have mattered much if you were on U.S. air flight 93. So I guess you can say they are indiscriminate about killing, as long as you are American.
It is sooo easy to spout freedom and liberty, spitting on rights ect. But all that has absolutely no meaning if there is no more America or American's. No, securing the country must be priority! All other arguements are just window dressing if there is no country to defend! And if it takes using the Patriot act to do so, then it must be done. By the way, wiring tapping is only done to countries that sponsor terrorism (Palastine, Iran and Syria) for example.
I also found it rediculous that of all people, Ted Kennedy came out agianst water boarding terrorist's that are known to be withholding information that could save lives. Of all people Ted calling it cruel and unusual torture? Didn't Mr. Kennedy drive a car into a lake, killing a girl, then walk home and eat breakfast, sleep and not report it for some 14 hrs after first contacting his attorneys? What a hypocrite!!
Our guest's at Gitmo are well treated. They are monitored by the International Red Cross, and have frequent vists from whinny liberals concerned for their well being like Pelosi, Chuck Shummer and Barney Frank. The detainee's are treated to prayer mats / rugs, new copy's of the Koran (which are handled with gloves by our soldiers, becuase a infadel to touch it would be the ultamite religious insult) and custom prepared food to acommodate the Dietary needs of Muslims. By the way, a gitmo detainee actually gains on average 15 pounds by the time of their release. Back to the Koran thing real fast, something like 45% of the detainee's can't read, but are given a Koran anyway. This must be the torture you speak of.
How does our enemy treat our prisoners? Well, we could ask Mr. Nick Berg. Oh thats right! we can't, they cut his head off, filmed it and sell the tape/dvd for entertainment in markets around Iraq, Iran and Afganistan. Yes, American's watch reruns of Friends, terrorist watch other terrorist's torture and kill Americans.
The question really should be, how do you stop an enemy within? How do you (without the Patriot act now) pre-emptively stop plots to create terror on our shores without limiting any rights or freedoms? Its so easy to criticize, anyone could do that. How about thinking through a solution.
"I don't like it" is what an 8 year old says. What's your idea slick?

I haven't lost any freedom....just because its getting to the point that you better be very clear in what you are saying on the phone so a 3rd party doesn't get the wrong idea, make sure you don't buy too many of the wrong items at the store or the cops will be kicking in your door looking for a meth lab, any opposition to born again religious fanatics using the power of our government to smite evil and force us to live the same lives of boredom they chose is treason, privacy is now only for terrorists, or disagreeing with a drunkin cheerleader or a drug abusing talk show radio host is un-American, that doesn't mean i have lost any rights.
afterall how many rights does a person need, other than the right to keep your mouth shut and goto work, the right to keep your mouth shut and follow everything the preachers says to do, the right to keep your mouth shut and agree with all GOP talking points, and the right to keep your mouth shut and take it as hard as any corporate CEO wants to give it to you anyway they want to?
are they building fences on our borders to keep immigrants out, or just reloacting the Berlin wall to keep us in?

I can understand what Bush wants for Iraq. But to think that we can turn the Middle East into a free nation especially in his time frame, is pure ignorance.
Too many Soldiers lost their lives so I can live mine free of fear and prejudice. To say No one has ever spat on a Vietnam Vet is absurd. My father is a VN Vet and he has suffered more then we will ever know, even now.
He gave more up more then half of his life serving a country that seems to have forgotten his sacrifice. SHAME ON US
Freedom for the sake of Freedom goes against everything our soldiers have died for

Freedom is relative, the Iraki never asked to be delivered from Saddam... The US invited themselves there. North Korea, Myanmar, have no freedom, and yet, did you ever hear somebody in the Capitol says, lets freed the north korean... Never, because the US, is not figthing for your freedom at all, and your soldiers are not dying for it too...
Freedom is when you owe nothing to anybody, no debt, no credit cards and no bills to pay... But this freedom is utopy, so yours too!!

"We cannot expect the Americans to jump from Capitalism to Communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving Americans small doses of Socialism, until they suddenly awake to find they have Communism."
- Nikita Kruschev, Premiere of the former Soviet Union, 3-1/2 months before his first visit to the United States.
"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of "liberalism," they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."
- Norman Thomas, for many years the U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate
"Today Americans would be outraged if U.N. troops entered Los Angeles to restore order; tomorrow they will be grateful! This is especially true if they were told there was an outside threat from beyond, whether real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence. It is then that all peoples of the world will pledge with world leaders to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. When presented with this scenarios, individual rights will be willingly relinquished for the guarantee of their well being granted to them by their world government."
--Henry Kissinger in an address to the Bilderberg organization meeting at Evian, France, May 21, 1992. Transcribed from a tape recording made by one of the Swiss delegates.

And what "rights" are our American soldiers getting from the terrorists? Did they not find the dead, tortured body of an American soldier this week? Are not two of his comrades missing also? Were they tortured? You can bet on it.
Our liberal immigration policies are letting terrorist prance right into this country, set up terrorist cells, and plan attacks right under our noses. For example, the cell that was just broken up in NJ. Had it not been for a civilian, those terrorists would have killed many.
You feel bad for the likes of those who killed almost 3000 people on 9/11? Awww, those poor terrorists, who are receiving clean clothing, shelter, recreational equipment, and "culturally correct" meals. Oh, the suffering! That's a helluva lot more than our boys get when they're captured by Muslim terrorists.
If the Patriot Act allows law enforcement to monitor these people who are attempting to kill us, then so what the harm in it? The government isn't hauling off innocent people and placing them in concentration camps due to anything obtained through the Patriot Act. The only ones that need to fear it are the ones who are breaking the law, or committing acts of terror.
The "soldiers" of old would have condoned executing these terrorists. They also would have condoned mass invasions of nations who state sponsor terrorism. Do you think George Patton would have put the peace beads on and joined up with Cindy Sheehan? Forget it!! He would have condoned them being killed to the last of them.
You're so worried about your rights, and the rights of these murderous terrorists. If they're allowed to do as they please, there won't be an America left for you to have your "rights" in. Get in the fight, or get out of this country.
Oh, by the way..........We haven't lost squat. I'll personally kill anyone who invades my country or attempts to kill any American. The fight is long from over.

because conservatives like the words "liberty", "freedom" and "justice" as corporate window dressing to get sheep to digest lies without upsetting their stomachs
In practice conservatives strongly oppose liberty, freedom and justice
Any country, group or individual dares strive for actual liberty, freedom, or justice is swiftly dealt with as an enemy of American Empire. America's real foreign policy is a long history of denying freedom and justice to ensure better corporate control and higher corporate profits

"Yesterday's solder" (i.e. the so-called "greatest generation" that fought in WWII) fought on behalf of zionism. They may have thought it was "freedom," but it wasn't. Today's middle eastern situation all stems from Israel. The patriot act is just the first step towards a permanent overbearing zionistic neoconservative regime. The Republican Party and Democratic Party both realize this. There's no more democracy.

just like the sheep of germany thought when the Nazis where rising to power, "my rights are fine... I have nothing to hide", they think a right is only a right if you use it, and it is only lost if it is actively obstructed.
luckily, our founding fathers didn't feel the same way, or the US Constitution would have only been three paragraphs long.
