Ever since they won in 2004, everyone tells me that they will have to wait another 87 years to win another one. Why is this so? What rule in baseball says they will have to wait 87 years? If so, then why do they even bother to play the games?

You know, even though the Red Sox are probably the best team in baseball, the odds are against them actually winning the World Series this year. When they get to the playoffs this year (which is almost a foregone conclusion), they're going to have to make it past three very competitive teams to actually win it all, and the odds are against that happening. Even if you say they have an 75% chance of winning each series (which is extremely generous), that means they still only have a 42% chance of going all the way. I think the Cards proved last year that the best team doesn't always win. But the unpredictability of it all is what makes it exciting.

Anyway, to answer your question, well, you never know how long it's going to be until a team wins the World Series. A lot has to go right for it to happen. I think that the Red Sox are definitely going to stay as one of the top teams in baseball for a long time now. They are in a tough division (the Yankees in particular are going to continue to be tough competition for them for a long time), so that hurts them a bit, but you have to like their chances of winning it way sooner than 87 years after their last one. You have to figure that if you make the playoffs, you have somewhere around a 1/8 chance of winning it. I'm going to guess that the Red Sox will be making the playoffs at least half the time in the foreseeable future, which would mean they ought to win the World Series at least every 16 years or so, on average (it's a really rough estimate, of course). But you never know how that's all going to work out. It shouldn't have taken them 87 years between wins... things just didn't go their way.

There is absolutely no evidence that the Red Sox have any less of a chance to win a world series than any other team in either the American or National Leagues. The reasons they did not win a world series for so long are many, but the most obvious answer to why they won in 2004, is that they have a terrific GM Theo Epstein. He has created another good team which right now is the best in baseball. They have a very good chance of making the world series this year. The bottom line is that EVERY team in MLB has the same chance of winning a world series because they don't play the season on paper. They actually go out and play the games.

I agree with the guy directly above me, the Sox are on fire this year, and as far as I can tell they have a good chance of making it again this year. But I am not going to blow it and say they are for sure, everyone knows they bomb after the all-star break! But they won't wait another 86 (not 87!) years to win a Series. Whomever told you that was probably a Yankees fan that is just jealous that they are 14 1/2 games behind the Sox.

The ownership that is in place right now will not let the Red Sox go on another spell like that again. They are smart and savvy business men. Unlike the jokes we had with Harrington and such. These guys like Theo and Luchinno know how to put a team together. Ya, they may spend money on one pitcher who might have an era that is high, but also is third in the MLB with wins...so whatever. Not to mention he is being acclimated to life in America and pitching against real hitters. This dude has stuff and he can make people look silly. I would say give him a full year in this league you before you judge him. He is right now the third ranked pitcher in the rotation, not to bad..

The sox have a great chance to win this year. They are a better team than 2004. They are focused and playing as a team. They do not depend on just Manny and Papi anymore. They are hitting from top to bottom, playing good defense, and having unbelievable pitching.

People who say that to you are most likely Yankee fans. They are reeling this year and have nothing better to do than bring up old shiet that don't matter anymore. They should worry about themselves, since they haven't won since 2000 and don't look like they will this year either! Oh, and they have only won 6 times in the past thirty years, so that pretty much puts it in perspective how dominant they really are...Most of those 26 championships were won prior to most of us being on this earth! Just tell them whatever...you have the curse of the A-Rod now.

Winning over 20 World Series does not make a crew well. Also, the Yankees' payroll is so top that the luxary tax they pay is larger than the complete payroll of the Florida Marlins. In 2004, the Yankees had over $70,000,000 greater than the Red Sox and that could not even win them a World Series! Yankee baseball has turn out to be approximately cash and shopping as many superstars as viable. Red Sox baseball is approximately... good, baseball!

They are just people that are looking for an easy way to get under your skin, evidently it worked. These are the same people that put all the blame of the failures of the Red Sox 87 year dry spell on Babe Ruth with some kind of "curse" and not enough on any of the actual players not named Bill Buckner.

Those people are credible sources!!! Remember, they are the same morons who said the Red Sox could NEVER win another World Series again because there was some fairy tale "Curse of the Bambino." But they won it in 2004. So there was never a magical "curse" - who knew?

Buddy,
They have the best record in baseball now, today.

They are the hands on favorite to win the world series this year in Las Vegas.

I think they might win it in 87 games not 87 years.
