Divide 3 5/9÷32. My division is a bit rusty and the only solutions they gave me to this problem were:

a)1/9
b)12/9
C)2/9
d)192/33

My answer keeps coming out completely different. What's the correct answer and how do you get it?

3 5/9 simplifies to be 32/9, and then you multiply that by the reciprocal of 32, which is 1/32. The answer I got is A.

(1) - Shortcut, can use to check your work
when you are rushing on a test

Multiple choice elimination trick:
Go through each choice A B C D.
Prove three answers are not the same value (cross these out) and the one that is equal will stand out (circle it).

A, B, C = multiply each fraction "by 9" to get 1, 12 and 2
If you multiply 3 5/9 / 32 "by 9"
you get (27 + 5) / 32 = 1
so A is right (because it also equals 1 when multiplied "by 9")

(2) To show your work
(3 5/9) / 32
a. Change 3 5/9 (mixed number) to a fraction
Multiply 3 x 9 and add 5 to get the numerator of 32
over 9 = 32 / 9
b. 32 / 9 divided by 32
same as 32 / 9 times 1 /32
Multiply these two fraction.
32 cancels on top and bottom
Final answer is 1 / 9
So A is correct

Again, the simplest way to check if two fractions are equal:
(1) either multiply both fractions by the same number (to cancel out the denominator) and see if you get the same value. Just be careful not to write these notes as your answer instead of the fraction you got as your answer!
(2) or compare two fractions by cross multiplying
to check if they are equal
Example: To check if
2 / 4 is the same as 5 / 10
cross multiply to get
"2 x 10" and "4 x 5"
Both pairs equal 20 so the fractions are equivalent

A. You multiply 9 and three, then add 5 to make the mixed number a fraction. Then you change the division into multiplication by changing 32 into 1/32, then you figure from there.
