Notre Dame vs. Michigan
The close proximities of the schools and the long history of successful programs. These are two of the greatest programs in the history of the NCAA. When people talk about the great programs of the NCAA they don't even bother including ND and UM in the conversation because everyone already knows these are the two greatest teams. The rivalry is best epitomized by the fact that they sit #1 and #2 on the all time NCAA championship list and Michigan hates being edged out by Notre Dame.
Texas vs. Texas A&M
Nowhere in the world is football taken more seriously than Texas. Football is god in this state and these are the two largest and most successful schools in Texas and they have been competing against each other since the beginning of time.
Texas vs. Oklahoma
The Red River Shootout - football is almost as important in OK as it is in TX which means it is still more important in OK than anywhere else in the country. This rivalry, like the UT / A&M rivalry dates way, way back to the early days of the Southwest confrence. This is not a fierce rivalry, it is a deep seeded hatred that dates before the game was invented. Texans and Okies use every opportunity afforded for a rivalry at anything, this is just the most popular.
Michigan vs. Ohio State
Dominance of the Big Ten which is probably the 2nd greatest confrence in the NCAA (2nd only to the SEC). This rivalry usually settles the dominance question for all of football in the mideast and north east. And this rivalry also goes back FOREVER!
Alabama vs. LSU
Football is king in the South and for a long, long time Alabama wore the crown while LSU was sucking hind tit in the SEC west. That hasn't been the case for the last 15 years and this is a rivalry that has really sparked back up because of it. Bama alumni can't stand the idea of playing second fiddle to LSU.
Alabama vs. Auburn
See above note on the importance of football in the South and then take into consideration the innerstate rivalry of Alabama. This one goes well beyond rivalry- its pure hatred, and it has for 100 years.
Notre Dame vs. USC
This one doesn't quite go back as far as the ND / UM rivalry but its close and there have been some classic games between these two. For decades the NCAA title often came down to these two programs. Unfortunatly with ND's slide the last 15 years this game hasn't meant as much but it is still a fierce competition that everyone gets up for.
Florida State vs. Miami
Florida is probably the richest talent pool for football players in the country. This rivalry goes to show how important the dominance of the talent pool really is. Unfortunatly with the way these two programs have both been slipping the past few years, the rivalry doesn't mean as much, especially since they're now in different confrences but the 80's and 90's were dominated by these two schools.
Honorable Mentions:
Throw Florida in the mix with FSU and UM (either / or)
Georgia / Georgia Tech - interstate rivalry between two storied programs
Michigan / Michigan State - great interstate rivalry on a regional level (MSU doesn't have the history of UM)
UCLA / USC - intercity rivalry of two of the greatest programs in the history of the west
Virginia / Virgina Tech - and for the fun of it West Virginia. These three games are always great and there's a rivalry between them all because of the close proximity of the teams.
Notre Dame / Penn State - these were some great games in the old days and many a championship were decided by these two.
I'm sure I'm leaving someone out and I'm sorry. These are just the games that I'm used to and always look forward to every year and they make for some great rivalries.

Michigan v Ohio State
BIG 10 rivalry, BIG 10 football doesn't seem to get the respect that it deserves. The BIG 10 is about smash mouth football. Getting through a BIG 10 schedule undefeated is a great accomplishment.
the close proximity to each other
The rivalry begain in 1935
This game is played at the end of the season and almost always has bowl game implications if not national championship dreams.
ESPN branded Ohio State-Michigan the greatest rivalry in sports history. Ali-Frazier was second.
Auburn v Alabama (second place)
(Regardless of egg that OSU laid in the National Championship game last season)

It depends
Prestige: Notre Dame/USC arguably the two biggest college football programs in history with 24 combined national championships and 14 heisman winners. This game usually has championship indications and is the only rivalry game with national relevance unlike interstate rivalries.
Good Games: Miami and FSU usually have entertaining, if not close games. ESPN Classic is filled with a lot of seminole/cane games.
Hate Filled: Michigan/Ohio State. The Iron Bowl is close but these fans are evenly filled with rage at each other in this rivalry that usually decides who wins the big ten.

Well my favorite rivalry used to be Va Tech ( Go Hokies ) and UVA, but its not much of a rivalry when VT beats them every year. My favorite now would have to be Tennessee and Florida. Great SEC football which always has alot of talent in it. Great college football atmosphere no matter where its played, all around a great rivalry.

1. Florida - Florida State. Just pure hatred. Anytime that the fans boo children over wearing opponents jerseys....marriages divided....all out brawls....just pure hate.
1a. Florida - Georgia. Cocktail Party. Screaming insults. Equal fans of both sides. Very loud. Long standing hatred of the puppies, who are now Florida's b%^tches.
2. Auburn - Alabama. Any game that has to be FORCED by the government to play because they hated each other so much needs to be there
3. Army - Navy. Can't believe no one mentioned that one.
4. Texas - Texas A&M. Classic.
5. Michigan-Ohio State. You still need a conference championship, but this is a classic.

I beleive you have to go with Ohio State/Michigan. It was voted the number one rivalry in any sport by ESPN. Another one up there is USC and Notre Dame. In the history of those two schools there have been 25 national championships and 14 heismans.

It hasn't always been but Florida and LSU is fast becoming a big rivalry. I'm sick of the people saying Ohio State/Michigan. The big ten sucks. Give me SEC football anyday.

this one's not even close. Last years #1 vs #2, which could well happen 2 or 3 times in the next decade, says it all. 2 of the best programs every season w/plenty of history.
