I would take the Bill of Rights and show how each Amendment (1 - 10) applies today. These 10 Amendments were added to the Constitution, because there was nothing else to protect the rights of the people which were not defined in the main Articles. American democracy and the daily freedoms enjoyed by American citizens are based on the Bill of Rights (the main Articles of the Constitution merely define the functions and powers of the three branches of federal government).

You can summarize each of the Amendments in your own words, and fill up an essay very easily without plagiarizing. For the Bill of Rights, go to http://www.constitution.org You can also find summaries online of each of the First 10 Amendments.

Example:
1. We use freedom of speech and freedom of the press every day to communicate, since the media has become democratized over the Internet. We can "petition" the government electronically and "assemble" to organize with other citizens "virtually." We exercise First Amendment rights on a daily basis, either in private or in public.

2-3. Protections against abuse of government or military to oppress citizens.

2. Citizens retain the right to own and use arms (or today, more people rely on legal action to defend themselves or their property). So the right to "defense" is used every day, either with physical guns or with civil alternatives.

3. Soldiers cannot invade our private property. You could compare this right to the war against terrorism taking place in Iraq instead of America.

4-5. Protect security and due process.

4. Police and federal agents must follow legal procedures before searching premises or arresting people. This prevents corruption or abuse of government authority in an unjust or unlawful manner.

5. Cannot be forced to incriminate oneself, cannot be tried twice, or be deprived of rights or property without due process.

6-8. Other rights concerning trials, including:
right to public trial, to be advised of charges, to legal counsel, to trial by jury, to nonexcessive punishment, etc.

9-10 Protects rights of the people and of the states

As previously, where the historic fight to establish the Constitution was to balance central federal government with individual authority of the states, today this battle still continues but now people are fighting to balance the central authority of the state with the individual authority of the people.

So the Bill of Rights still applies today, to protect the rights of the people from abuse by state or federal government.

Note: Other important events:
* 14th Amendment extended Constitutional standards from the federal government to the State governments also
so that all citizens are guaranteed "equal protection of the laws"
* Civil Rights Act extended equal protections to
all public services and institutions, to ban discrimination
