Some say that turning it on and off wears it out. You should adjust your settings to "always on".

I do. I've been doing so with my Gateway M320 for two years with no recognizable consequences. Make sure your laptop is well-ventilated, well-cooled, and has a decent screensaver. Allowing it to shut off its monitor after a half hour or so is also a good idea. Or better yet, shut the lid so nothing is on the screen at all. Computers can run for several days at a time without being shut off (although it's not recommended), so 12-14 hours is no big deal.

I work my laptop 8-10 hours a day.
I elevate the back so it does not overheat and keep the fan vent clear of obsticles.

I've even left it on overnight in sleep mode and it still worked fine.

Sure. Maybe someone else knows if it would hurt the battery, but I doubt it. I used to leave my Vaio on for weeks. You will be producing heat the whole time so it's sort of a waste of energy, but you certaily won't hurt the machine.
