Depends on how much work you want to put into it and what you want from your animals. I have had both.
A cat is low maintenance and they are very independent in nature. Keep the litter clean and put down fresh water and food once or twice a day. They like to cuddle and be stroked. Long-haired cats need to be brushed frequently to keep their coats from matting. You have to clip their nails periodically. (Not that hard to do with cats). You can leave your cat alone all day.
A dog is high maintenance. You have to train them to go outside. You have to walk them and obedience train them. You have to brush them and if you have a hair dog (as opposed to fur) you need to get their hair cut or learn to do it yourself (which is not hard with an Oster hair clipper and the right blades). Clipping their nails can be difficult depending on the color. You have to bath them and brush their teeth. Of course you have to give them fresh water and food once or twice a day. They are however very playful and mischievous. How well behaved the dog is totally dependent on you. You cannot go out for long periods and leave the dog because they need to be let out to do their business.
You could always get one of each. I had a male cat and a small female dog which worked out. The cat thought the dog was a nuisance but the dog would try to play with the cat.
Keep in mind that some landlords do not allow pets but more allow cats than dogs.

Well its depends what you can be bothered doing because ....
A dog need a lot of exercise, they have to be walked about 3 times a day, (depending on the dog you get)..dogs are more playful than cats aswell
A cats are cute but dogs can be cute aswell..some cats like to have a play around in the garden...and some sratch your furniture.!
If you cant be bothered or dont have enough time because you are buy to walk the dog then i would get a cat.

Are you looking at all the angles?
Cats are fun to pet, but they aren't like dogs. If you are looking for an obediant companion to grow old with, I'd say a dog is best. If you want a purring, ball of fluff that could care less about anything but being mischievious, then a cat is is perfect.
Personally, I've always been a cat person, but I have owned both. Obtaining a pet is a very big responsibility, so make sure that you are properly equipped to handle the pet you choose. Remember, another factor of which to choose is the breed. Different breeds act different ways.
Good luck with your decision.

It depends on your personality.
Characteristics that make good dog people:
loyalty, directness, kindness, faithfulness, utilitarianism, helpfulness, team playerish, etc.
Characteristics that make you a good cat person:
grace, subtleness, independence, thoughtfulness, mystery, etc.
...Either one you choose, the most important characteristic for for both is: being a loving and responsible pet owner.
...Also, either one you choose, it would be great if you would start looking at the local animal shelters for your new family member. There are sooo many animals there that are hoping that some good person will come and take them home and love them forever.
Good luck, whatever your choice!!!
P.S.- I'm a dog person (I have 3 of the furry little maniacs!!!), so I can't help but be a bit partial to the canine side of the argument.

well i have 2 dogs and 2 cats and they all love to play id say my dogs play the most than my cats. dogs are more of a responsibility to take care of than cats and if you get a cat i suggest a female so you do not have to get the male spayed. The reason they need to be spayed is because they will spray almost everything in your house. we went through that and do not want to go through it again!! If you get a dog i suggest that you grt a small dog. unless your willing to take on the responsability. ~i hope this helped~

cats can be playful too! And so loving, they love to be petted and held ! you can buy cat toys and play with your cat too. Cats listen only to them self more so ! They will come to eat and be loved on ! A cat is easy to potty train ! inside or out ! There easier to take care of then dogs, they cost less too ! I like both though and have both !! my cats stay out side though and are no problem! dogs are good too, so it depends on you !! what do you prefer!

It really depends on what traits you want in your pet. Are you ok with walking a dog 2 - 5 times a day? Do you want a low or high matinenice pet. Low get a cat high get a dog. Do you want a pet that will sleep a lot and be a lap pet or a pet that you can play with all day long? It all really depends on you.

if you want a personal friend and companion a dog is the right choice, but if you want low-maintenance a cat is the way to go, as for playfulness both can fit that description.
