The Yankees have a payroll of 194,663,079 seventy four million more than the RedSox (120,099,824)and 100,000,000 more than alot of teams. With having the resources of an all-star team and continuing to be the doormat of the AL east, has Joe had a free ride on his all-star and MVP players to give him the manager record he has?

Torre doesn't have an all-star pitching rotation with all of that money. You could have Arod and Pujols on the same team, if your rotation can't keep the other team off the scoreboard, your bullpen is going to get overused and the losses are going to pile-up even if it's 8-4, 9-6, etc.

I think Torre is a very knowledgeable baseball man, obviously if he's been able to keep his job in NY under the boss's watch, and the spotlight of the NY media, I think you see a knowledgeable man who can keep his cool long enough to negate any kind of outside pressure.

He's had to sooth those big egos and get his team to play as a cohesive unit over the years and he's done that. People say he gets a free ride because "he manages" a bunch of all-stars. I could make a similar argument under that scenario for Terry Francona when you talk about a big payroll team that constantly produces all-stars.

I think though that managing is more than just about benefiting from having a stacked team. Is about knowing what to do with your players, and what to do in key pressure situations. Joe Torre has managed the Yankees to 4 world series titles.

Go Orioles!!

D-Low. You don't think the guy who calls the shots, which relievers to bring in, when to give the batter the bunt sign, when to tell the baserunner to steal second?

Nevermind the clubhouse presence and work ethic and philosophies, and the fact that ballclubs often take on the personality of their managers. I'd say the manager has plenty of influence on a ballgame even though you can't blame him for a batter striking out, or the pitcher giving up that homerun that landed somewhere in the next state.

Joe Torre is a great manager. He won before and now he has a team of all-stars that don't fit, a washed-up drug user, and no reliable starting pitching.

First, as like the Lakers when they signed the glove, the mailman, etc. they didn't win. Why, because a "team of all-starts" is an oxymoron, they are not a team. (look at USA Basketball in the Olympics recently) They are individual parts that don't fit. Also, Abreu's numbers are terrible compared to his Philly days.

Second, you have a detraction in Giambi. His drug use has led the Yankees to try and void his contract. Another distraction. They are professionals but they are also humans.

Lastly, you have no rotation. The Rocket is not the same pitcher but he will help. It still won't be enough.

None of this is Joe Torre's fault.

If they do fire Torre, which is a mistake, they already have Larry Bowa on staff to step in.

Yes he is a good manager. If you remember any of the rosters of the teams that won chapionships in the '90s, those teams didn't always have the best talent, especially the '96 team. Those teams had many solid players, but few superstars. The Yankee teams since has had many guys who are only in it for the money, and for their own stats. It's tough to manage guys like that.

And according to Dan Shaugnessey of the Boston Globe, who has covered the Red Sox for many years, the Red Sox payroll is $145 Million, so the gap isn't quite as large as you stated, although still sizable. The salary gap will shrink considerably the next two years as Clemens will pitch only one year, and the contracts of Abreu, Giambi, and Mussina, among many others, expire. Also if A-Rod opts out, there's another $16 million off the books (the Rangers pay the rest of his salary). Big salaries don't always translate into results, as people like to believe.

Well you have to think that the Yankees have suffered so many injuries that any other manager including Willie Randolph and Bobby Cox would be in the same predicament. Although the clubhouse could have exploded already, Torre has been able to keep the media, players in check. For how much longer, I don't know. If Torre was put into this same situation, except for the players being healthy, he would have already been canned. Besides, if any heads will roll first, it's gonna start with Brian Cashman. He has made some strange moves and questionable signings. Key example, CARL PAVANO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

at first, i'm a crimson Sox fan. I even have seen some video games the place judgements he's made i presumed had a detrimental result on the recreation, and that befell approximately 4 circumstances. the guy's controlled what a million, one hundred-something wins and four WS and 13 submit Seasons with the Yankees. They (Steinbrenner & Sons or Cashman) are somewhat retarded to enable him bypass. Who the heck do they think of they're going to replace him with? Mattingly? Mattingly became right into a 1B, All-huge call. good Managers (of the properly-known a Yankee supervisor could desire to be) are the two Catchers or Pitchers, not First Basemen. I propose his first twelve months there he controlled a be conscious sequence win... yet another element as quickly as we had that knuclkehead Dan Duquette he spent plenty time blaming human beings ... after a whilst there became into no person left to blame. an identical element will ensue to Cashman (who sounds like a typical manhattan city sleaze bag anyhow). returned, as a crimson Sox fan, it is super information. i'm hoping Torre is going to Texas, he can artwork some magic with them. he's a stylish guy and he will have a good destiny. Yank followers get waiting for us to take many greater branch Pennants now which you have basically enable the main experienced and argueably the perfect supervisor in baseball stroll out the door.

I don't think there is such a thing as a great manager in baseball. Managers are about as important as punters in the NFL. Every team needs one, but very rarely will they make a difference in a game.
