Is it ok to give your new landload all your family member's social security numerbers. Thats what the new landlord asked for and we gave it to him. We didn't know who to ask if its ok to give the landlord the ss #. Is there any law in Illinois that requires the landlord to ask for it? I hope he doesn't do anything illegal with them.

He only should be asking for the SSN's of the people on the lease to do a background check. If your family is on the lease, then yeah he needs them. Don't give him anyone elses.

Your landlord really only needs the SS#s of the lease holders (ie anyone over the age of 18 living in the domicile)...not your children. They do however need to know the name of every person residing in the apartment or home for emergency reasons (ie there is a tornado, they need to know how many people in each apartment for rescue purposes). It has a spot for everyone's SS# but you are not required to provide it. The scary thing is that it is common place for people to try to steal childrens SS#'s for identity theft.

My recomendation is at this point (and from now on) anytime you need to give out your childs SS# (ie to the doctors office or to your work for insurance purposes or the bank to open a savings act) you keep a record of who you gave the number to and when...this way if something ever were to happen you could give the authorities the names and dates of who was given the number.

I don't know the laws in Illinois but if a landlord wants to run a credit report, he has to have the social security nos. to run it. If you're still upset, write a letter to the credit bureaus and tell them you want to be notified of any new inquiries on your credit report. Send 1 regular 1 certified. Also get the physical address to the credit bureaus.

Landlords normally require this. Landlord will do a credit check using the number. Nothing else will be done with it.

Uh, no, there's no law that you have to - and that's a very odd request. I'd ask him why he wanted them. Sounds really shaky.
