Let the two numbers equal x and y:
x + y = 17
x - y = 29

2x = 46
x = 23

y = -6

x+y=17
x-y=29

x=17-y
17-2y=29
17-17-2y=29-17

-2y=12 y=-6
x-6=17 x=23
