if i were on a desert island and the only water sourse was the ocean, is there a way to effectively de-salt the water for drinking? this is assuming i also have some basic tools (pot, knife, matches, etc).

construct a transparent plastic tent on top of a basin of sea water.. if the sun is high, the sea water will evaporate and condense onto the plastic.. since the plastic is triangular, these condensed water will eventually slide down to the edge so you need to put a basin to catch these water. make sure these catcher basins are made of materials that won't allow high evaporation rate, say a basin that is painted black inside and out... these condensed water should be tasteless as the salt particles are left on the salt water basin (so now you have your salt also ) :)

Distillation
Heat a flask with the salt water then allow it to evaporate, collect the condensation via a glass tube from the flask to another container.
but that is ideal lab conditions, you would need to heat it and somehow collect the water vapor

Boil the water. (Let it evaporate). This will leave the salt behind. Collect the water vapor and condense it back to a liquid.

Evaporation. Boil the seawater and catch the rising vapor and then re-condense it. What you have is pure fresh water.

Build a solar still- you need a plastic sheet and a cup... and probably a pan for the saltwater.
