Most people are too lazy and uncivilized to care about spelling and/or grammar.

Failure of schools.
Failure of schools.
For more than that, consider that when the Russians sent Sputnik into orbit, every one suddenly decided that the U.S. students were deficient in math and science; ever since then, schools have focused on math and science, which is riduculous, because without a good basis in language, math and science is useless.
Another reason is this thing I am currently using: the computer. It has spell check and so forth.
Also, people spend more time time playing computer games, etc., and less time studying.
I don't know about you, but it has been a long time since I met a teacher that was good in grammar usage and spelling skills. Most people just do not think it to be important now-a-days.

In answers, it's fast typing and the spell checker being limited in what words it knows. else where on line it's fast typping and uncertainty of spelling. Off line, it's all of the above plus poor education, laziness, and or a lack of reading and grammar skills. And the fact that some words are pronounced differently than spelled. Some times it's a result of being tired, too.

The same reason that children don't say "May I...?" Our society is in a hurry all the time and it's hard to slow down for manners. My son has a class for spelling, but none of the other classes deduct points for misspelled words or poor grammar (He's happy, I'm not). I think everything is computerized, so everyone relies on spell check. Unfortunately, if spell check recognizes a word, it doesn't correct it if it is used in the wrong context. I really wish spell check would decipher there, their and they're for people. (My personal pet peeve)

I believe the lack of grammar and spelling skills we see in this day and age has primarily to do with the lack of interest most people have in reading and/or writing once they leave formal education. Also habits such as texting in shorthand on mobile phones have insured that most people would rather just get their point across rather than taking the time and pride into sounding and writing "respectably."

Simply, because they don't care. How many generations moved to America and taught themselves proper English? It's not the public school system nor the teachers therein to be blamed. It is the individuals who lack pride in themselves to excel at something as socially mundane as speaking and writing with more than passable ability. (I can't help but laugh at the answers you received with poor grammar and spelling).

I personally blame it on things like spell check and grammar check on computers. So many people rely on them that they get lazy and don't learn how to properly spell and write themselves. It's a shame, really.

They don't necessarily lack spelling and grammar skills, they just don't use them.

People sound as if they've never cracked a book. When I was growing up, people valued knowledge. People's English is so broken. I stopped the "Me & so and so" elementary school.
I attended a private elementary school in which proper english was stressed. I am glad, too. My junior high adn high school, I was in public with idiots. If knowledge were food, they would die of starvation.

Laziness. Too much text messaging and spell checks. No one uses a dictionary anymore. If you look in the dictionary you get several meanings as well as learning to spell and it increases your vocabulary. When my son asks me how to spell something I make him look it up.
