Yes. You can see this in the animal world; salmon that are raised in a pond are not as good eating as those that have to stuggle against the current.
People do not "bloom" without a challenge. The trick is to keep the challenge from overwhelming the individual, causing frustration, depression or worse.

It doesn't matter if we "discover who we are". We are meaningless lumps of moving carbon. Someday we'll be dead. Whether we understand ourselves or not.
