Upgrading RAM is so simple.
The cost isn't certain, because it depends on how much RAM want to buy. Check out some sites, eBay is a good place for some good deals. I buy RAM from there...
To install it, it's really easy...but I fell I might sound confusifying trying to explain it. So, here's a site that will help you out...
http://lifehacker.com/software/feature/hack-attack-how-to-install-ram-138665.php
When you open up the case, you'll see the old RAM already in there, if you're replacing it, it's as easy as taking out the old one and pushing in the new one. Simple!

First you have to determine how much RAM your motherboard will tolerate. Then, determine your needs.
I don't do games. I use my computer to search for information and to do my work in Word and Excel - which I seriously enjoy. I have WinXP, and only 512RAM, but I observe the guidelines below and so far have had no problem:
Overloading Memory (RAM)
- set wallpaper and screensavers to blank or none — they run continuously in the background and use memory.
- review your start menu – remove anything you don’t need on a daily basis — load games, etc. on an as-needed basis.
- from Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options: delete cookies, delete files (offline), and clear history.
- run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag at least every two weeks (the more frequently they are run, the less time they take).
- periodically, click Start, Programs, Run — they type ipconfig renew
(that’s ipconfig space renew).
These things should increase speed and free up memory as much as possible.
It will also help if you download two free programs: Ad-aware and Spybot.

Go to the website memory-up.com - use the memory finder - it will walk you through getting the correct card. Depending on the size it will cost from $20 to $100.
I think the site also has instructions on how to install it. If not, you can find a bunch of site on the web. It is really simple to do, you just pop the card in the slot. I had very little experience and did it with no problem. It drastically improved the speed of my PC.

If you've never done it before, you should take it to a shop. You don't want to buy the wrong memory chips. Or you can do a search on Yahoo or Google for a tutorial. Ram is pretty cheap, the price depends on what type of chip you want to buy.
