Its hard to say what to exactly major in. You can pretty much major in anything as long as you have experience in the field that you want to go in. You know that you want to be a general manager for either baseball or basketball, right? I would suggest that you find a professional team in your area and actually do an internship with them... or perhaps work your way up. Though majoring in business may help, even communication. Just remember that you need to be happy with your major too. Hope this helps and good luck...

Call it a Ph D in the sport. You will need to have a professional background in sports management - working through colleges, minor leagues and then progress to the major leagues. You have to be willing to work your way up the corporate ladder like a player working up to getting a shot at the pros.

There are sports management majors at certain colleges, which will help you see if pursuing a career is right for you. Or you may seek out employment opportunities with area teams, but GMs have equal amounts of biz savvy as sports knowledge.

But the key is to gain knowledge in the sport and begin a patient - and what is oftentimes frustrating - climb through the ranks.

That's a tough one because there are so many different routes. Many of the GMs today were players at one point in their careers, and then moved into management. They had a variety of roles there, and then worked their way into the GM's spot. Player evaluation and contract negotiations are obviously a big part of the business.

But there's no clear path. Isiah Thomas went almost directly from the court to the GM job in Toronto. Theo Epstein has a law degree and worked in media relations, among other duties, on his way to the Red Sox.

Quick story for you. One time I asked a GM if his job was fun. He said, "Funny -- one time I saw a bunch of general managers looking glum. I said, "Do you guys ever have fun?" One replied, "If you are looking to have fun, you are in the wrong business."
