If you don't agree with what is going on overseas then it is definitely not a good idea to join the military, since you would be expected to participate in an activity which you disagree with.

If, however, you have no problem serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, then the military might be o.k. But you need to make sure you are prepared for the discipline which the military instills, as well as for all of the other demands which military life requires.

My nephew was prepared to join the Marines after high school, and may very likely have been sent to either Iraq or Afghanistan after training. He actually looked forward to the strict discipline and physical regime imposed by the Marine Corps, and was prepared to fight wherever his nation sent him. However, he suffered a major knee injury just prior to leaving high school and was unable to pass the initial physical exam, making him ineligible for the Marines. He definitely did not look forward to the possibility of getting killed in combat, but he still believed that the military would make a good career for him.

If you believe the military would be a good choice for you, regardless of what is going on overseas, then you should pursue the idea. Even though my nephew ultimately failed to make the cut, I know that he will never be sorry he made the effort.

If you don't have anything else going for you. The military has always been the last resort choice. Judges used to send boys to the military to keep them out of jail.

A lot of people fell for the NeoCon propaganda right after 9/11, but we now know that was all lies.

Look at how many kids come back messed up in the head from war. Most kids don't get killed, they get maimed for life. And for women, there is the high possibility of being raped as another responder pointed out.

Our nation is facing a tremendous challenge in the the next 15-20 years. Islamic extremists are truly trying to conquer the world, and the movement is growing. It won't go away soon. It will need to be defeated militarily.
If you want to be a part of this, it will be a good idea to join the military. They will encourage you to take college courses while serving, if this is possible, and they will give you valuable benefits, and you will be part of an effort as crucial as WWII. Of course there is a risk involved.
If you do not want to take this risk in service to your country at this time, don't join at this time.
The conflict will get worse over the years, and I think a lot of people who don't think it is worthwhile now, will change their minds later.

The sad, cold, hard truth is that a woman is more likely to get raped in the military than killed in combat.

In the first year of Bush's war in Iraq, 12 women were killed in combat while at least 37 reported being raped.

A study conducted by researchers from the Department of Veterans Affairs that was released in 1998 found that a third of 160 women who served in the 1991 Persian Gulf War reported "physical sexual harassment," including 13 who said they'd been assaulted.
