I've had something like that happen. Some how all my mail was getting fowarded to some address I never lived at. I still to this day have no idea how or why it happened. The sad thing is, I hadn't moved in years (I'd say about 8), and only came to find out about it when I opened a new bank account and never got my debit card or checks in the mail. When I called them, the said it was sent to some random address, and it wasn't just the checks or debit card, it was bills, birthday cards, W-2's, paystubs. Luckily as far as I know, no one stole my identity...

Sometimes the mailman just decides he has delivered enough packages for the day and misses your street alltogether, in which case he either stops at a dumpster on the way home or they have even been known to fill up their attics and basements with letters and packages that were SUPPOSED to be delivered.

The USPS has an automated redirection system to deliver mail to people who have moved. That is your mail is automatically forwarded to your new address. If there are errors in the records in the database, then yes it is possible that mail will be forwarded to a very different address.
