the word "percent" is actually a combination of words "per cent"... which is "per 100". Cent, as in 1/100 of a dollar or as in the word century, for 100 years, etc. A percentage is a number that represents an expectation or a fact, in numbers "out of a hundred samples". Out of 100 people, 37 got the cold... therefore 37 per cent, or 37% fell ill. Because it is out of a hundred, x% can be written as a fraction, x/100 or decimal. The term percent, the symbol %, is just a unit that represents a fractional portion. We use percentages as statements of fact, like the example of people getting the cold I used. We also use percentage as an expectation, or probability, if we can calculate what the factual percentage will be after the fact with any certainty.

In statistics, the highest probability is 1 or 100 percent. Percent is the most useful way to transmit stat information.

statistics/probabilistics is a subject that takes events that happened before like... if a you're trying to bet on a team and the team u're betting on won 3 out of 4 games it played it will have a 75% chance of winning(the probability) though this is a weird assumption because there are more factors leading to the final % of a team because you have to take in mind factors like weather, the % of the other team etc... so % are used to know what is the probability of something happening
