Friends dont lie to each other. Losing a friend over something so petty is stupid. They need to be honest and open with each other.

You really can't keep anyone from lying, if they want or feel the need to then they will. The only thing you can do is hope that they won't. One way you can help cut down on them lying is if you catch them in a lie then confront them. By confronting them with a lie then they will probably be too scared to lie about something else.

One of my favorite interrogation techniques is guilt. So what happened? Has your friend stole money from you or has intimate relations with your significant other?
Real Life Example: Rumors around school was about my girlfriend making out with some jockstrap at a drunken party (I couldn't attend, I had a family trip to Disneyland).
1) Confront the problem- I confronted my girl and I asked her very gravely, "Is it true? Have you been cheating on me." Of course her answer was, "No I didn't, I swear. Fuggin Jennifer spreaded it after she saw me talking the guy she liked."
2) Plant the seed of guilt- I looked straight into her eyes (seriously) and said, "You know I trust you Monique. You would never do anything to hurt me because I would never do anything to hurt you."
3) Make them feel comfortable for a little while then completely change her mood- I took her out for Sushi the week after the rumors and said, "I have a gift for you." I gave her a pearl necklace (FAKE!!! Because I knew she cheated on me from the start and I wanted her to feel miserable about going behind my back) outside the restuarant. She looked at it and started to weep. "What's wrong Monique? Don't you like it? Maybe I should've gotten you the diamond one..." She bawled like a baby. She ran away crying. I stood there smiling.
4) Get the confession- I went the next day to Monique's house. She was alone. She let me in and we started talking. I brought her that fake pearl necklace and told her she forgot it when she left. A couple of tears came out and she made up an excuse, "Oh sorry, these pearls remind about... my dead grandma and her death is still painful." I smiled and said that it was okay and I told her that I wanted her to have it because I trusted her completely and was willingly to give my life to make her happy. She weeped and confessed the whole thing.
You see. You guilt to your advantage. One things us humans have that can make or break us is emotions. Guilt, depression, etc is a weakness. Happiness, anger, etc. is a strength. So use my technique and you'll get the whole confession.
P.S. I broke up with her at her house and to this day she can't look at me in the eyes.

You can't. Some people were raised differently, some people view things differently and some people react differently to situations.
In general, people lie to protect themselves, perhaps your friend doesn't know how to defend herself verbally so she lies.
If its to an extreme, perhaps you should re-evaluate how much of a good friend she is.

You can't change anyone. You have to accept them for who they are and just know that they may not be telling the truth, or just don't be friends with them anymore.

You can't control anyone. If they are going to lie they will do it no matter what you do. You just need to let them know that you value the truth and you don't appreciate it when they lie.

You can't. She's either going to lie or tell the truth. But you should be friends with someone you can't trust.

You cant really control that, you can just be aware that they may not be truthful with you, so dont be jumping into battle for them until you know all the facts.
