What were some of his ideals?

As leader of the CCP, Mao certainly had enough ideals to sustain himself and his followers through the 'Long March', through 20 years of Civil War with Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists, and as the Chairman of the Communist Party of China after 1949. Unfortuntely, his economic ideas were complete failures.

His ideals are in his collected works, and more briefly in his 'Little Red Book.' One of his main ideals was to forge a Chinese communist revolution, and not the same path or same methods, as those of the Russian predecessors. He excelled as a military organizer, and his theories on 'Guerilla Warfare' were read and adopted by others around the world.

Mao had so many "issues" it's difficult to answer the question. Plus, he changed through the years and the decades.
Ideally he was a communist, and therefore he believed in a strong central government comprised of representatives of the working people. He believed in shared wealth and 'from each according to his ability, to each according to his need' ...

But in the midst of this he was unbelievably corrupt, murderous, naive, vicious, a sex-fiend, and brutal. How many people is he responsible for killing? Millions.

Perhaps his greatest ideals were in himself and his own absolute power.

It has recently been revealed that he was one of the worst mass-murderers in the history of Asia. He was very pro-communist, especially after winning out against Chiang-Hei-Shiek.
Communism, propaganda, and murder.
