This could be a backyard breeder. Real breeders breed for genetics and health and betterment of the breed. You could still check it out as even some show quality breeders end up with pups in a litter that would not be considered show quality dogs.

I would be a little cautious. Some people spend a lot of time and money showing their dogs all year to get a Championship title on them. They can charge more for show quality dogs. Other people just like to breed for fun, and would charge less. Just make sure they have been vet checked first, ask if there are any health guarantees (get it in writing) and check the temperament of mom and dad. The pups should be friendly, clean and well socialized. Use good sense and if the family is clean and seems knowledgeable about their breed, you should be OK. If you get the feeling the people are just out to make a buck, then I'd be cautious.

I would suggest you give a puppy a lot of thought. It will still be very young & in need when you go back to work in the fall. A young adult would be a better choice IMO.
the breeders you are seeing are most probably back yard breeders. be very careful A reputable breeder will not sell a puppy untill 12 weeks, will only sell on a neutering contract & will have you fill out an application
Have you considered rescue?

You should not buy from breeders who advertise "pet quality" dogs. All dogs that a reputable breeder breeds should be of top quality. It should come from parents of great pedigree, be tested for all genetic defects, and be treated as if it is going to be of top show quality. Good breeders care about the quality of their dogs and treat each one as if it will someday compete in a dog show. Although they do expect some will become family pets a good breeder never downsizes.

Please please please take the time to review the breeder. Ask for references and other owners. I have recently purchased a dog and as much as our family loves her to death, we did find out the breeder was running a puppy mill. PUPPY MILLS MUST BE STOPPED. For the dogs who are being killed or mis homed. This is not fair to the animals. I beg you please look at there home. How many dogs, puppies and breeds. You can usually get a good idea of the breeder and what they are out for. Are they just looking for the almighty $$$$. If so then get out of there. You are not doing any puppy a favor by bringing it home to give it a better life. If the breeder make the $$$$ they do NOT stop Puppy milling. Please think long and hard of this and your cheaper breeders. Do your home work. I beg you.

Just ask about their return policy. When I buy a dog I always pick them up early and go directly to my vet to have them checked out.
Depending on what the vet says will depend if I keep the dog.
