I just had a goodman condensor unit (the outside part of a split system) replaced. It was tripping the breaker. The unit was 17 yrs old. My AC man said it sounded like the compressor went out and sure nuf it was. When he let out some freon it smelled like burned plastic... the compressor motor was fried. He replaced it with a 14 SEER Frigidere 4 ton unit for $2800... ouch! Good luck.

Sounds like the compressor is going. If unit is old this is probably the problem. If unit is fairly new breaker may be defective or improperly sized.

You may have a short in the line turn off power and check for dead rodents in the electrical area. Other wise compressors probably bad

the circuit that it is on won't handle it you will need to call a good electrician to make a circuit just for the unit,but first make sure that the only thing on that circuit is the air conditioner
