Going to sum this up kinda odd... if you have questions email me.
-Gray Wolf: Canis lupus
-Red Wolf: Canis rufus
-Artic Wolf (subspecies): Canis lupus arctos
-Eastern Timber (subspecies): Canis lupus lycaon
-Eastern Canadian Wolf: Canis lycaon... they are still doing studies on this one to figure out where it fits
-Great Plains Wolf (subspecies): Canis lupus nubilus
-Mexican Wolf (subspecies): Canis lupus baileyi
-Maned Wolf: Chrysocyon brachyurus
Seems like I am missing one in there.
As far as coyotes go they are just a close relative, and there are about 19 subspecies of Coyotes. Kinda like different species of dogs. A gray wolf is one species of canine and a coyote is another.
Take Gray Wolves vs Coyotes
Gray height 30" avg
Coyote height 18" max
Gray weight 50-100 lbs
Coyote weight 25-45lbs

In the US, Mexico, & Canada we have gray/timber wolves (Canis lupus). There are several subspecies of gray wolves (some would include domestic dogs as a subspecies) inhabiting various areas.
In the US, we also have red wolves (Canis rufus). The red wolves are critically endangered with one subspecies surviving. They exist mostly in captive breeding programs. Recent evidence suggests that the red wolf is not a species of wolf but a fairly recent natural hybridization of gray wolves and coyotes (Canis latrans). This brings us to your second question.
The DNA of gray wolves, red wolves, and coyotes is virtually identical which means all three species are very closely related and can interbreed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To answer your last question, most wolves but certainly not all are a subspecies of the gray wolf.

Yes, I believe GSDs would survive. Although they are domesticated and look to humans for food, German Shepherds still have strong PREY DRIVES. They even chase small dogs at the park. My old gsd would catch birds, rats, and.. a stinky opossum. That was in my backyard alone. There's prey out there, believe that. My current german shepherd dog is a pure bred gsd that survived as a puppy up to 5 months as a stray. There's a chance they will survive and they may be skinny due to lack of nutrients or thrive in a rich environment. There's a chance they won't survive like any wild animal. They should have a pack to help ensure survival.

Some wolves; from west to east, US. Canis lupus arctos ( the arctic wolf ) Canis lupus occidentalus ( Rocky Mountain wolf ) Canis lupus nubilis ( Great Lakes and region wolf ) Check my spelling, as it is terrible. Wolves and coyotes are the same genus, so, evolutionarily, very close. Go here.
