There seems to be two huge misunderstandings out here concening the National Baseball Hall of Fame:
The first is that it's a branch of MLB ; It's not .The HOF is a private organization that can set it own rules in the way that it see's fit so that it can best accomplish it's purpose.
The second is that playing ability is the sole criteria by which a player will be judged when he comes up for election and nothing could be further from the truth.
Article 5 of The Rules for Election to The National Baseball Hall of Fame by Members of the Baseball Writer's Association of America states:
Voting- " Voting shall be based upon a player's record, playing ability , integrity sportsmanship , character, and contributioms to the team(s) for which he played"
Notice that half the criteria are objective and half are subjective.
If the BBWAA doesn't want to admit Bonds because of subjective issues they are completely within their right to do so and my guess is that's what will happen.
McGuire's a different story he doesn't make the HOF because of character issues and many including myself believe that he was one or possibly two dimensional player and really isn't worthy.
The bottom line is that the HOF is a very hard club to get into and I personally think that it's great that those running it intend to keep it that way.

Rose
Blyleven
McGuire
Bonds
Griffey Jr

I did this by date of retirement because three of them should be in already (Rose beat Cobb, Blyleven was dominant at 294 wins, and McGuire revived baseball after a strike). I think that Bonds will retire before Griffey JR and both should be first vote HOF.

Blyleven's under-rated. He was never the most dominant pitcher of his time...but was very, very good for a long time. (Sort of like Don Sutton, though Sutton won more games.) I think he's a HOF'er...but will probably have to wait for the Veteran's Committee to put him in.

Ken Griffey Jr. will definitely be a HOF'er....probably in first year of eligibility. I wish he had never gone to Cincinnati...I wanted him to go to the AL where he could DH now and again and save some wear and tear on his knee. Would LOVE to have seen him go to Baltimore...he always hit a ton there.

Rose has HOF numbers, of course. They always said that all he had to do was apologize to have a chance...but then he apologized and made himself look even worse. (Similar to Bill Clinton's apology: I did it...now shut up and let's MOVE ON!) Sounded obnoxious and arrogant, and I frankly don't think he'll get elected now until he's a very old man and the pity aspect comes into play.

McGuire and Bonds are basically the same case. Both outstanding players pre-steroids...and both became even greater through abusing steroids. Big difference is McGuire was always well-liked, while Bonds has always been a flaming damn asshole. Tells you all you need to know about him when you consider that...of all the people who thoroughly despise him...most are his former (and current) teammates. If we ever picked the biggest asshole who ever played baseball, the five most likely candidates are Hal Chase, Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Albert Belle, and Barry Bonds. All pretty good players....probably because if not, no team would have ever put up with them.

I say both would have been HOF'er if no steroid abuse. McGuire needs to come clean and be real candid, with no evasions. If he does, he goes in. Bonds will never admit it, so his tremendous inflated stats will have to get him in by themselves. (Assuming there's no federal indictment, of course...) Not sure if he'll go in his first year or not. I personally would never vote for the sorry piece of sh*t.

1. Bonds (everyone takes steroids)
2. Rose (not until he dies)
3. Griffey (he might be first if not for injuries)
4. Blyleven (good pitcher for a long time)

Maybe
McGwire (totally one dimensional player marred by injuries)

1) Rose, he should still be banned but allowed to be a Hall of Famer. 3,000 hits guarantees you a spot in the Hall. 4,000 hits should be the reason MLB should make an exception for him to be in the Hall while still being banned.
2) Bonds, he's not a cheater.
3) Griffey, his swing alone should be inducted seperatly.
4) Blyleven, healmost won 300 games, but he also lost 250 games as well. 60 shutouts & 242 complete games are alot but zero Cy Youngs is not. 3700 k's is great, and it looks even better becasue he only gave up 1300 walks.

Not in) Big Mac hit 583 homers but they account for most of his hits. He was a very one dimensional player. He had wayyyy more chances to hit because pitchers didn't pitch around him like they do to Bonds. He has 1600 hits and 583 of them are HRs (40%). Its not only his low avereage (.263) that is going to keep him out, but I think his 1600 strikeouts will also be huge in the eyes of the voters. I think Sammy Sosa (600 HRs, 2200 career k's) deserves a spot in the Hall of Fame if McGwire gets in.
