We are not a democracy ... where the people vote on everything. Rather, we are a republic, where we elect officials who will vote on all of the issues of government, taxes, trade, the military, etc. for us. We don't vote on those things, our designated representatives vote on them ... therefore, we are a republic.

In a true democracy, all important issues are put to the voters as a whole to decide. For example, if someone wanted to set the speed limit at 55 m.p.h., in a pure democracy, the law would have to be approved by at least 50.01% of all eligible voters.

In a republic, the voters elect representatives to decide important issues. For example, the representatives could pass the 55 m.p.h. speed limit law in their assembly, and wouldn't have to submit it to the whole electorate (all the eligible voters) for approval.

We are a republic because we elect the President, Senators, and Representatives - and then they are the ones who approve the laws that bind everyone in the United States.

I believe it also means you are not under the control of any foreign power.

For example here in Australia we are a commonwealth and still under some power from the Queen in England, we have a Governor General who is effectively the Queen's representative here in Australia and although her power has waned over the years it still exists.

In the USA there is no such foreign influence.
