The gestational months are based on a lunar/moon months, that is 4 weeks equals 1 month... At 1 month, you have technically only really been pregnant 2 weeks! But your gestational age is said "1 month"

Average first pregnancies are 41 weeks 1 day.
Average pregnancies with prior births are 40 weeks 3 days.
Only 4% of babies arrive on their due dates.
And 2/3's are born within ten days, of the estimated due date.

So don't get too attached to that day as it is easy to get dissapointed when that day comes and goes!

Doctors usually count from the start of your last period - if things are normal, that's 2 weeks before the actual conception. So if the doctor says you are 5 weeks, you are actually 3 weeks since conception or a week less than one month. ( 4 weeks = 1 month).

Doctor math also says that a month is 4 weeks exactly. So 40 weeks total since your last period is "10 months" - or at the end of your ninth month of pregnancy, you should give birth.

In a real calendar, about every 3 months there's an extra week because those pesky 30 or 31-day months are longer than 4 weeks, so a pregnancy works out to 9 months by the calendar.

So if the doctor says 5 weeks, you're 3 weeks along. Ask him if he's using standard doctor counting. They use it because it's easier than figuring which months are longer and shorter and all that carp. Anyone else is probably using a normal calendar.

every 4 weeks is 1 month

4 weeks = 1 month
8 weeks = 2 months
12 weeks = 3 months
16 weeks = 4 months
20 weeks = 5 months
24 weeks = 6 months
28 weeks = 7 months
32 weeks = 8 months
36 weeks = 9 months
40 weeks = 10 months

And yes, there are 10 months in a pregnancy! If your doctor hasn't already told you this, or you haven't been informed elsewhere you may want to discuss this with your OB.

You'd think, but not really. The lady that said a month is 4.3 weeks is accurate. You are pregnant 40 weeks, but not 10 months, only 9. It's a little confusing, but the weeks you are pregnant NEVER match up accurately with the number of months you think you are if you divide by 4. Got it?

I don't know how they work it out. I had a positive pregnancy test when I was a day late with my period & was told I was 6 weeks pregnant but how can that be? Assuming I got pregnant halfway through my cycle I would only be 2 weeks.

Yes, it would mean 3 weeks since you conceived and 5 weeks since the first day of your last period which is the beginning of pregnancy.

No, it means 5 weeks. A month is 4.3 weeks. A pregnancy is 40 weeks.

That means one month + one week. They count from the first day of your last period. So you actually conceived 3 weeks ago, but they also count the first 2 weeks of your cycle.
