I'm sorry to say that the real problem is hard to pinpoint. However ill guess to say its likely a combination of an older system, lots of services running, and a virus. You sound competent using Spybot and Adaware, but those in my experience are better at preventing major problems vs. fixing them. McAfee is great at solving the problem, but you have to use it as an emergency boot disc (if you bought the disc anyway) instead of just installing it. Thats the only way it can work with a clean setup (the virus probably boots early).

Its also worth a try if you're able, boot in safe mode. Select the Start->Programs->Accessories->System restore and choose a point when you don't remember having problems. This will rewind the registry to a hopefully cleaner time. Maybe at least allowing you to back up a few files (if you need to reinstall the system).

Barring that, it may be a boot sector issue. You can boot your recovery cd (or original windows install cd) by pressing f8 at bootup and selecting the cd-rom to load. When it loads, choose the dos-mode or recovery. Then use the fixboot command.

Last thing I'd try if I were in your shoes, is redirecting the question to McAfee's forums, or opting for their technical support.

I'm by no way an expert, but I've fixed more than a few friends computers... you know, instead of living in the sunlight.

Based on what you assert. It's rough to determine what the obstacle is. You didn't say whether or not you're utilizing High velocity or dial or wi-fi. If you're utilizing a wi-fi web, it might be sign barrier obstacle. If you're utilizing High velocity, it might be adware obstacle, if dial up, might be bandwidth obstacle. If you have been utilizing you laptop adequate earlier than. I do not believe it is laptop obstacle. Modem vigor surge obstacle may be viable.

even if you formatted it 1 week ago, you can still get infected. the error might be related with the mcafee software itself. maybe it needs memory to run more effcient, or perhaps it just needs to be reinstalled, hope this helps

and yes, the blah blah blah portion of the error message would help us figure out your problem.
