Readers block can be best defined as having a lack of interest in literature. I thought it was a "phase" but then it grew into something a lot more serious

Switch genres. If you've been reading fiction, read some of the new political blockbusters. Whatever you do, don't just sit in front of the TV mesmerized. You'll become brain-dead.

I'm going through a trial at this time but at the same time there is Peace that has entered in because I know that all is well with my soul. God is in control of my life and that alone is reassuring. I know that as a Believer everything that comes my way has to first go through God. I injured my back yesterday after falling and the ER physician said that I have a compression fracture in my vertebrae. I'm in pain. I've been sitting here for only five minutes and am ready to lay back down. This is a good time to talk with God and relax even though I can't afford to relax because I won't be able to work for a couple of weeks. But, He has given me Peace and therefore through this trial I'm able to withstand the pain and know that He is Jehovah Jireh my Provider.

Aw. I had that last summer. I hated it.

So I sat down at the library and went shelf through shelf, looking for a book that caught my attention.

Literature sucks lately. So it's rare to find a good book. Especially for people my age, sixteen. The books in the young adult section are about middle school...detectives...with talking dogs...and a crush on the boy at school who likes their friend. And the books in the adult fiction were mainly about middle aged women who just went through a divorce...had a one night stand...got AIDs...and started a business to fulfill their lifelong dream.

Okay, so I'm exaggerating. But I'm hoping someone out there gets what I'm saying.

The book I found that got me out of my reader's block is "I Know This Much is True" by Wally Lamb. Awesome if you love psychology-type stuff.

Despite my reference to middle-aged AIDs books, "Lucky Us" by Joan Silber was very good.

Maybe you'd like non-fiction books? I like to pick up one of those everytime I get to the library...And because I want to know about a variety of topics, I just close my eyes and pick one. And read it. Whether I like it or not.

Go back to an old favorite, read it again. It could be a recent favorite, or a childhood picture book. I loveee reading children's books. They remind me why I love books so much now.

It all depends on what sort of literature you're into. Personally, I never get tired of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. Good subversive fun that makes me laugh out loud and doesn't insult my intelligence. Neil Gaiman is another good author for darker tinged fantasy. Or, if you're into history at all, you might try Michael Shaara's "The Killer Angels" - which was the novel that the movie, "Gettysburg" was based on. Excellent reading - not dry or boring at all.

Hope these might be of some use to you!

I don't know if you've ever read any of them, but I would suggest Harry Potter. Don't let the fact that it's called a Children's book turn you off, if children were the only ones reading it, preorders wouldn't already have reached 1 million on Amazon for the 7th book.

Start with the first book if you decide to try them.

try re-reading a favorite book and remembering the joy you had from it. or find new books with topics that you are interested in.
I've experienced reader's block before i found it was because i was getting bored of the books i usually read so i tried reading exciting new books and authors I've never read before along with old favorites. i just read as much as possible and hoped i found a book i was interested in. eventually i did and I'm reading more then ever.

I like the idea of re-reading something you loved, but haven't read in years.

Other suggestions: get a few anthologies of short stories. Sometimes you will find something different that will surprise you.
Try listening to books on tape while driving. It gets the sense of hearing involved.

Try The Bastard by John Jakes or maybe The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay

Happens to me, occasionally. That's when I turn to brain candy...LOL
Pick up a book in a genre you never read....for me, its funny fiction....something so outrageous that all I can do is snicker while I read and turn the pages thinking, that's so stupid, there can't be more!
The Cat Who's do it for me every time.
Good luck....sometimes it takes a while to even get yourself to pick up a book when you feel blocked.....its the worst feeling.........
