The situational irony is that the two families (Capulets and Montagues) are in constant conflict while two of the children from the opposing families have fallen in love. Romeo and Juliet have chosen each other from the only households their parents would have forbidden. Other examples of situational irony are that the potion ultimately causes the death of Romeo when it was meant to help fake the death of Juliet. Another one is that Romeo kills Tybalt when he would have him be his kinsmen. Also that Mercutio is one of the most tragic characters even though he is the clown of the play.

The play was written to show impossibilities and insurmountable odds that at least two people tried to overcome.

It was most certainly designed as a love story, albeit an ill fated one, but also analogous in conflicts so egotistically self centered, and socially inane that no one ever had a chance from the first line written.
