It's how the people in power stay in power. If everyone stopped for a moment to look around and realize that Democrats and Republicans are both self serving assholes who act in their own interests, sometimes in the interests of their local constituents and very rarely in the interests of the nation as a whole, people would be outraged. However, people do not do that, they look across a party line and see an enemy when what they should see is just another citizen getting ****** by the government.

It's our leaders. Bush is very bad at talking to the other side. Usually what he has to say to people that disagree is something along the lines of "There are some things in my policies that they might like".

Even Clinton was known to try to defuse the opposition, rather than ignore them like republicans have done in the last few years.

So the attitude starts from the top. The president's badly chosen words anger his opposition. They in turn figuratively want blood and it creates a bad competition environment.

The defusing of this situation also needs to start from the top. This attitude is here to stay until Bush is gone. Hopefully the next person will be more interested in crossing the divide. Either that or this country will fall apart quickly.

No it isn't constructive for the county to be that divided.
This country has some very real problems that need to be addressed.
But both political parties spend most of their time discrediting and attacking each other.
If they spent just half of that energy, money and time fixing the problems this country and the world would be better for it.

There is a reason George Washington did not like political parties and warned us about them back then.

Well, as a native Denverite I must say I'm flattered by your reference. For the record, it isn't much of a rivalry anymore because the Broncos so consistently beat the crap out of the Raiders. But we can pretend.

Anyway, about the politics...

Most people in Colorado are conservative Republicans. So most of us agree on politics and religion and the like.

Political parties are effective tools at influencing public policy. But sometimes some folks go overboard and make politics their whole life. That's a real shame, IMHO.

No. Its absurd but it has been this way for a very long time. If you look at political adds from the late 19th century they are often worse that the hatchet jobs we see today. Still I agree we need to kill the two parties and try some honest discourse. Check out this website, there are a lot of folks who agree with you

people had better get excited and active in politics and damned soon or we won't have a country to be political about, and every one should research and find out what the people who they vote for are actually for, as campaign lies are so prevalent, every one should at least consider voting for a third party as the two party system we presently have is no noticeable difference as they are all for the party and not for the people, and both present party's are owned by Apac.

People BELIEVE in their positions on politics. Nothing stirs up conflict like unwavering belief. Just check out the religious section of Y!A for proof. Constructive? No, no one listens when every one is yelling.

This divisiveness started when the Democrats got beat in the 2000 presidential election and then cried like little babies for several months thereafter. Hell, they're still crying.
Democrats are the ones who are dividing this country to regain and hold power. They play their old games: rich vs poor, black vs white, haves vs have nots. They pit one group against the other, all for votes.
They are pathetic, calling Bush everything from a monkey to Hitler. Then they turn around and make like they are the nice people who are compassionate and loving.
They make me sick.

The country is divided and except for occasions, just as 911 or WW ll, that is good, because we not only have the right to our own opinions, but the right to express them. Look a Yugoslavia, that country was ruled with a iron fist, with no descent allowed, and when it broke apart all hell broke loose

You should fear our Government when both parties are like minded. The two parties pull each toward their own goals with the other party in direct opposition. To gain is to compromise. However to much results in pork-barrel spending or corruption, and that is where allot of our problems come from.
