I'm old school and day Bed was long ago for me with children.

Do you wish to keep the twin size? Are there rails? Is there a head/foot board? Do you want to remove or change them? Do you want to enlarge the bed to a Full?

Depending on construction details of Your bed, you have many options.

It is according to how much work you want to put in it. You can simply take off the back panel and get a box springs, but that may look bad.
You can cut the back off on each side to the size of the head and make a nice headboard, eliminate the footboard (top), and make it look like a reqular twin.
We did this with our daughters bed and it looks really nice
