In the ground, trapped in porous rock that is under arches in layers of non-porous rock (including salt), usually floating on water below it. It is gotten out by drilling through the non-porous rock and letting the pressure of the water and in many cases of natural gas to force the oil to the surface. Some is pumped as seen throughout the southwest.
