Take it back to your mechanic and leave it overnight with him. Let him start it in the morning and then he may hear what you are hearing.

OK, is this something it does while moving or when sitting idle with the transmission in Park?

One of the more common "knocking" type noises can be the exhaust system carrying engine noise to the muffler. It is more noticeable when the motor is warming up. Most cars have the newer style catalytic convertor that reduces back pressure on the motor (exhaust gases) and the mufflers themselves are now less restrictive and the gases flow through then better. All of this is designed to improve gas mileage and boost horsepower. I guess you could poke your head under there or get your ear close to the ground where you hear the noise while the car is idling and see if that is in fact the spot where the muffler is mounted or the exhaust pipe runs under the car.

If the noise occurs while you are driving then it could be something in the tire tread or actually inside the tire. I have pulled objects out of tires that were accidentally left inside before it was mounted to the wheel or "rim". Typically a valve stem and it's amazing how they can be virtually rubbed away to nothingness from riding in the tire so long. Why the people didn't do anything about it is anyones guess.

Anything else mechanical in nature will become more obvious in time and then it can be identified and repaired.

The only other "entity" that would be mysterious in nature, if the car is moving, is a broken steel belt inside the tire tread. These are not always obvious until the tire goes flat or there is some sort of wobble felt while driving.

Good Luck!

If you are hearing the ticking noise at the top of the engine then I think it is the valve lifters. The valve lifters are hydraulic and make noise over time. Are you doing regular oil changes? If not do a oil change and see if it helps. If it does not help then I think the lifters or lifter may need replacement. Assuming it is a V6 with a 3400 engine they are notorious for lifter ticks as they get older. This noise is not harmful at all. Now the timing chain is an the right side of the engine near the belts. do you hear a lot of noise such as a knocking or lapping noise? then it would be the timing chain.Go to a different mechanic who is trustworthy and get a second opinion.

Have the exhaust system checked out.
