I always look for the 'heart' of the person, matter or thing.
The spirit of it so to speak. Thats where the beauty is, thats where truth is, and thats where connection is.

It matters especially when we try to really get to the bottom of things...it's fundamental truth so to speak.
Here are some philosophical thoughts on essence:
"In philosophy, essence is the attribute (or set of attributes) that make an object or substance what it fundamentally is, and that it has necessarily (in contrast with accidental properties that the object or substance has contingently, and without which the substance could have existed). The notion of essence has acquired many slightly but importantly different shades of meaning throughout the history of philosophy; most of them derive from its use by Aristotle and its evolution within the scholastic tradition.
Based on such considerations, essence was a key notion of alchemy (cf. quintessence).

Essence is like scent of an object (i.e. the scent of a rose; or the spirit of a legal document. In the sense you are talking about essence is very important. Because that is like tha overall nature of an experience you are undergoing. It is extremely important if you are under obligation to an authority. The essence of that relationship is very sensitive for you and must be handled with common sense. To insure that you are not scammed by authority.

Absolutely. The very essence of life is who we are, the very breath we breathe everyday. It is the energy that is in everything, it is the smallest most tiny peice of matter that makes up all that we have and are in this world. The human condition varies all around us and is so vulnerable and fragile at times to the world and different circimstances. The more we keep our hearts open to what people are going through and volunteer what time we can (even if it is small) when we can...the essense of things would be better.

The essence of all things is the only way we can think about them. We cannot assume to have knowledge in every instance; however, we do have a general understanding based on the feelings we have concerning those instances we have experienced. We do not have definitive knowledge but we do get the gist of things. No one could ask for more from a simple being as ourselves.

If essence is all I am able to sense of a thing for knowing it, then all existence is essence. This particular peculiar thing is known as that, and that is one kind of knowing it, but the other knowing for it is knowing its universal self, its species, and that is knowing its essence. Is knowing its essence all there is to know for this particular peculiar thing? Certainly not; there is its time and its place, and an abundance of other possibilities that make it a unique thing in its self.
