Given that dogs get very stressed out when left alone and cats (for the most part) don't, it's easier to leave cats alone than it is dogs.

I think that it is better to leave a cat home alone rather than a dog from experience. As long as you have a clean litter box and enough food and water your cat is fine. A dog on the other hand, will probably have to use the bathroom, play,or even just get bored and the results are pretty ugly.

Dogs freak out when they get left alone, and tend to use the floor as if it were the grass outside. Cats, on the other hand, have much more fun when you're not around. I have 6. Every time we come home, somebody jumps down off the kitchen table, is laying under the lizard's heat lamp, has been playing in the water bowl, is running laps around the inside of the bathtub... So cats would actually prefer that you leave them home alone than be home with them, at least when you have multiples. With one cat, you might want to have some kind of toy for it, like one of those mice on a string that hangs from the door and squeaks when it's jostled. Those get annoying while you're home, especially if the cat really loves it, so you can put it out just when you're leaving and put it away when you get home. Some cats like toilet paper, and those will find it on their own. Then you may have to start hiding it, unless you like coming home to an internally TP'd house. Napkins are fair game, as is anything small left lying around, especially if it is something that isn't usually left lying around or is left in a different place. The most fun you can have with your cat while you're home: put something unfamiliar on the floor and wait for the cat to sniff it. As the cat is stretching out and sniffing it warily, oblivious to you, nudge the thing ever so slightly and watch your cat as he is suddenly three feet above the floor, at least, tail bottle-brushed to the max. The real dramatists will spit and hiss for a few minutes, pupils dialated until it looks like there's nothing but pupil. Have fun!

If you must leave a critter at home alone, a cat with food, water, and a clean litter box is best. A dog has to be walked so he can go potty, but a cat can take care of that without the attention.

A fish!
Oh, thats not one of my choices. :)
Seriously, animals need companionship and I know some would leave their cats home for a week or more alone, but I never would. I have someone come in twice a day to check on my cat. Like others have said....cats are much less dependent on humans as long as they have a litter box, food and water.

Well yeah probably a cat because their more independant and don't need as much attention as dogs and all they really do is sleep all day anyway. However it's not a good idea to get a cat or a dog if you aren't going to be home much with it and it'll be left alone, no reputable breeder or shelter will sell you one anyway if they don't think you'll be home enough.

Cat. You can leave a cat alone for a week if you give it multiple litter boxes, tons of food & water. If you did that do a dog it would over eat, poop/pee in the house & get destructive. Cats are independant, they sit & do nothing. Thats why I have dogs

A cat is definitely better to leave home alone. They do not have to go outside to go to the bathroom and they can not do as much damage as a dog to your house.

from experience of having both a cat and a dog (both of which were both either litter box trained or house broken)I would have to say a cat. We used to leave my kitty alone for a whole week (and have a neighbor come by every other day to check on her) and had no problems. My dog now is housebroken except for when he is left for more than seven hours by himself. I wouldn't suggest leaving a dog for more than three hours (until it is older and trained) by itself. My answer is def.. CAT!

Definitely a cat. Dogs are not as self sufficient. I think dogs get bored more easier and tend to tear up the house especially when they are younger. When most cats are content to sleep all day.
