It depends on where you live I guess. I've been delivering pizza for years and have never had any problems- and my shifts run 5PM until 3AM, so I'm out there in the middle of the night. The cities I've delivered in are about 60,000 people, so we're small enough cities that we don't really have any "bad" parts.
And hopefully you'll be making cash drops as the night goes, so you won't have that much cash on you. People are pretty aware that drivers don't carry much money on them, and its not worth sticking a gun in someone's face and getting caught just to get $25 off the pizza girl.
Be sure to carry in your car: map of delivery area, pepper spray, BIG heavy flashlight (for light, and bashing heads in when the drunk frat boys try to climb into your car!), and ALWAYS have a fully-charged cell phone preferably in your hand at all times. If you feel uncomfortable going up to a dark house, call the customer and tell them and have them come meet you outside. If you aren't comfortable with taking a certain delievery, don't be afraid to have a guy take that one. I've done that on more than one occasion.
Its a good gig to have (Hint- wear a skirt when you deliver and watch your tips double!)

"Anything you can do I can do better - I can do anything better than you!" Girls can do anything, right? I refuse to let anything get in the way of what I want to do, not even possibly being the target of an attack (OK, I'm also in the Army... I don't scare easily) There are certain ways to make yourself less of a target. Walk tall and straight (it's intimidating). Maintain 100% Situational Awareness at all times. Don't carry more than you can handle. Don't let yourself be distracted while out and about. Carry personal protective equipment, such as pepper spray or a knife that's easy to open. Take self-defense courses, or even better, something more offensive like hand-to-hand combat. But definitely, don't forget you're a girl! Honestly, if I were to deliver pizzas, I'd make sure I had my make-up on just right and my hair fixed, and I'd wear my cutest (while staying practical) outfits. Because you know a cute girl will make a lot more in tips than a cute guy... I say work it!

I am thinking it is not an appropriate job for a female. There is a greater degree of risk for a female than that of a male I am thinking. Pizza delivery persons get robbed all the time. And if you are in a college town, you most likely will be delivering to partying frats and dorms where the guys might have been drinking and thus their inhibitions are minimized and they will choose to take greater risks and liberties with a female delivery person.
I am looking at this from a practical sense. You can make as much money doning lots of other things that do not have the same degree of risk involved with them. Choose wisely, you have your life to safeguard.

iwill tell you the same thing i told my best friend two weeks after she god hired as a delivery driver for Dominois. I told her this a week before she got robbed at gunpoint:
it is a dangerous job. As a driver, it is possible to get robbed whether you are male or female.
She was robbed at night, and the guy only got 40 dollars she had in her pocket. After ward, she was a little shaken up but it didnt really bother her. She continues to be a driver.
We are from a rough neighborhood. I have seen people get robbed. Ive been caught in the middle of a drive by shooting, and I went to school with people who have committed armed robbery. So this type of thing doesnt scare me. but if you are not used to such things, or think you would be bothered by these types of things, dont waste your time.
I dont want to seem racist here , but i believe that if you are a white female, your chances of being robbed are even higher. Im just being honest.
So if you are prepared to deal with the possible outcomes of being a driver, then go ahead. If you dont think you can handle something like that then dont do it. You can do it, but just be advised.
good luck

You should always carry protection if you're going to be going to strange neighborhoods late at night with a bunch of cash. That's just common sense. It's also a lot of wear and tear on your vehicle. Unless you deliver to the same area constantly to the point that someone knows if they order a pizza you're going to deliver it, then I don't see how it could increase the chances of being attacked. When they order a pizza they probably won't know if it will be you or some 300 pound former high school football player. Unfortunately the world just isn't a safe place for women. I recommend a self defense course to all women, especially to college-age women. After that, you should be fine as long as you're able to do the job.

Okay, consider the following:
* Are you petite? Smaller people often appear to be easier targets.
* How do you carry yourself, your self-esteem? If you have true confidence that shines through.
* Don't carry a knife unless you are prepared to accept the consequences of its use. A knife, as a weapon, is used for three things:
1) Intimidation - A case of one-up-manship. "I have a weapon and you don't", type mentality. But what if your assailant pulls a weapon? Are you truly willing to use it.
2) Torture - Death by a thousand cuts, so to speak.
3) Killing - Straight up, down to business. To end it right now.
A knife is a killing weapon. Meaning that it is too easy for its use to exceed self defense. If you use a knife, realise that the law will not be kind to you, even if you try to claim self defense. The moment you become the aggressor, you become the criminal.
* A mugger is likely to be excited and/or nervous. Their heart rate will be spiking. People in this state are unpredictable. They may or may not be easily intimidated or dissuaded.
* Don't expect criminals to be smart. Even if the pizza store has a policy to limit the amount of money that a driver can carry, that will not stop someone who is intent on robbing you. You might be surprised how many people aren't even aware of such policies.
* Carry a good flash light. Always check the dark places if you suspect anything.
* Carry a charged cell phone.
* Trust your instincts. There is a difference between fear and that gut feeling that says, "something's up". Listen to that instinct. The best way to survive a conflict, is to avoid it.
* Watch your surroundings. Look for anything out of place. Watch everybody like you have eyes in the back of your head. Use reflective surfaces to watch your own back. Know your lines of escape. Awareness is the key.
I know this all sounds like a lot of hardcore extremist/survivalist stuff, but think about it.
I've been a delivery driver for 2 & 1/2 years, and this type of thinking has helped to keep me safe on the job. I have avoided a few risky confrontations, and numerous surprises as a result of being aware of my surroundings.
In addition... The chances of being mugged on the job depends a lot on the suburb. But the chance of it happening is always there.

Actually, I have several female pizza delivery drivers. For the most part, it is safe for them because they carry less than $20 in cash. The payment arrangements are discussed when you place your order, so the driver knows ahead of time what money to carry for making change.

Heck yes they should, if they want. Why not? Women spent years and years trying to get equality. Anyway, they don't carry that much money, do they? They deliver a few pizzas and head back for more. Don't they drop off money? If I was going to rob someone, a pizza delivery person wouldn't even cross my mind.

I used to hire female delivery drivers back when I ran a pizzeria in College Station, Texas (1983-85). They were more dependable than guys. My assistant managers were both women, too.
College towns are a bit safer than most other places, though.

I believe in total equality. If a guy has to put himself at risk, carrying cash and delivering pizzas, so does a woman. No double standards, equal all the way down the line ...
but seriously, it is commonly known that drivers only carry a minimal amount of money on them, so you are at just as much risk carrying your purse anywhere.
