The sky appears blue during the day because the sun reflects the gas particles in the atmosphere. These particles act as a prism. At night as the sun sets, the sun is lower in the sky hitting the particles at the angle to create colors like red and orange. During the day, the sun's light is more direct creating blue.

The reason the sky is blue is because Nitrogen is the most abundant element in our atmosphere. As the Sun's light filters through the Nitrogen particles they appear blue in color.

The light coming from the sun is white light which means it is a combination of all colors and looks white.
When that light hits the earth's atmosphere, the air disperses and spreads the blue light all through the atmosphere. The yellow appearing light you see still coming straight through the atmosphere from the sun is really the combination of all remaining visible light colors and looks yellow.
This has to do with the different wave lengths of blue light vs all other colors.
