Whoa,,,slow down sweetie.....There is definately money in phsych...all you have to do is a bit more research...there are a multitude of avenues you can take in psych,,you could go with the justice system and grab tenure with an institution dealing with children,or adults, men or women....you could open up a specialized help office, dealing with specific problems:ie teen girls who like to cut themselves(this is pretty prominent in the world today),or with anger mgmt cases who were ordered by the courts to attend,or there is the military channel,,I know that sounds extreme, but the military sends alot of war vets for treatment and the insurance pays really well.......I'm not sure what kind of time frame you are looking at to be successful, but dont forget,,noone starts at the top,,we all have to pay our dues......try not to lose faith in what you love and know in your heart is the right path to take......Good luck....feel free to email me if you need further support,,I will be happy to try and be that person for you,,olddanishbloodline@yahoo.com....also feel free to check out my 360 blog,,,

I am planning on going into Psych too, but one of the biggest problems is how you approach schooling. If your major is psych (which I am assuming it is) then you'll need a minor that you can apply with it. For example (Another answerer already stated) business admin. It's a good one to use. Psych teachers are hardly in demand at all. It's not required for High school, so most schools aren't stressing if they don't have a psych teacher. The other main thing, is you need a good degree to make a decent sum of money. If you just get a BA or BS you can't do a whole lot. Most people won't want to see a shrink with just a BA. A masters is almost required to do anything with psychology. One of the best things that people don't realize is advertising agencies are always looking for people who can sell their clients products. If your creative and imaginitve that's one thing to look into if you don't want to get a PhD. Almost all psychiatrists are well off, but that's also med school, not just psychology. Pretty much you'll have to get a minor or double major with something that can tie into psychiatry, or get a higher degree. I know it sucks. I'll be right there with you in a few years. We should form a club. We can meet at the welfare office. Lol. Good luck.

There's money in psychology but you have to combine it with fields such as business or information technology.

One option for you is to get an MBA. Business and psychology is a good combination because there are many fields you can specialize in. Examples would be behavioral finance, organizational behavior(a sub-discipline of human resources management), and marketing psychology.

Another option you can explore is to get an MS in Information Technology or Computer Science. There are fields where psychology and IT/CS overlap. These would include human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, knowledge management, behavioral analytics, and expert systems.

I would also like to point out that we're seeing a lot of growth in Information Technology because as an applied science it is still in it's infancy. You won't find that much competition and if you explore this career path and you'll even be considered a pioneer.

If you want to make really big money don't go into psychology. Most people who go into psychology do it to help people not to make them selves rich. But that said you can make a good living with psychology if you really want to. Your best bet would be to go into private practice. My brother is a psychologist and makes about 100, 000, a year after his taxes. Since he's alone they take almost as much in taxes as he brings home. I know because he asked my help to get his papers together for tax season last year.

Go into Advertising.
You could be an account planner.
Then you could analyze the entire planet and get paid very very well.

This industry is such a racket.

I thought shrinks charged quite a bit. Especially renowned ones. What's wrong with $100+ / hour?

It all has to do with third party payments. Insurance companies do not want to pay for services of a clinical psychologist (Ph. D.) but will reimburse for services of a clinical social worker (MSW, LCSW).

You may be more suitable for a sales job, even an office Manager, with your background. Use it as a valuable database.

I'm sorry. I guess no one really wants to pay for mental health care, and people with serious mental health problems often cannot afford medication, never mind therapy.
