Most words in our vocabulary have more than one meaning. When we say "power outage" we are not talking about control, we are referring to the electricity that fuels the equipment to work.

When we are exercising, and we say "bursts of power" we are not referring to control, either. We are talking about a sudden appliance of force to do that activity such as lifting the free weights. In a short distance sprint when we say it is all about the power you apply, we are talking about the anaerobical force that needs to be applied rather than it is in a more cardio-vascular long distance running.

In a romantic situation, contrary to popular belief the "power" doesn't necassarily mean controlling the other person but passionately intoxicating and having a strong sexual pull towards that person based on the mutually felt desire.

These are just some of the examples of different meanings/usages of the word "power.

Hope this answers your question.

I don't think that control is necessarily a synonym for power. You can have power without utilizing control.

Math is a totally different science than linguistics.
The word "power" is a proper noun when referring to something mathematical, that is why you can't replace it.

The word "power" has many different meanings. One meaning is "control". Another refers to electricity. Another refers to a mathematical term.

There are many words with similar issues. In German, for example, the word "bundt" means "colorful" and it also means “gay” (as in homosexual). You could not use either meaning interchangeably.
