I have an idea for the name of a band but I want to copyright is so I no else can use it. What do I need to do?

Hmmm....you probably want a trademark which can be registered at the state or federal level (for more money).

Note: Copyrights are automatic as soon as you put your idea into a fixed medium (like email, voice recording, painter's canvas, etc). The key is that it be more than just an idea....it has to be recorded somehow.

That's not a copyright. You are talking about a trademark.

There are both state and federal trademark bureaus. I'm not sure but I think the federal supercedes the states. Google the US trademark office and look at the application.

You don't copyright a name, you trademark it. You need a trademark attorney, it's a lot more complicated than a copyright. Look up trademark attorneys. Good Luck!
