Ethernet is the technolgoy that is most used in the internet to network computers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet
a lan is a group of computers ( local area network)
a wan is a group of lans connected ( wide area network)
What you will encounter in a practical sense mostly now is a lan of a home or school network
The combination of lans is the internet
If you want to learn about networking find older networking books. Networking people ( in their minds) are the highest form of life. They are both too busy , self imporant and cannot or do no want to be bothered telling you much,
If you get ahold of some older networking books they explain things that you may want to know.

Ethernet is a protocol, invented by Bob Metcalfe. A protocol tells the ethernet card how to send the bits. The routers/hubs and the ethernet cards in the other computers on your LAN use the same protocol, so they can communicate.

Ethernet is pretty much just a general term for anything using a wired network connection.
Depending on who you ask, ethernet could be used to describe any kind of network, including LANs and the internet.
I generally use it in reference to network cabling.
