Ken A obviously doesn't ride. I started on a 500cc cruiser and that was plenty for my first bike. It was a Kawasaki Ninja 500 on a cruiser frame. I'm not a small guy either. I've taught 3 other people on that bike. I wouldn't go any bigger if you are just learning. You want something you can muscle around easily for your first bike. Secondly, an 1100cc motor is big. It used to be that anything over 1000cc was gigantic. My second bike was a Honda Shadow 1100 and that was a great size after I was comfortable riding. I just finished building a hardtail chopper with a 100" (~1650cc) motor and it has more power than I know what to do with. You will hate yourself when you drop that 1100 in your driveway the first time. And you will appreciate a bike like that so much more when you step up from a real beginner's bike. 250cc is probably way too small for anyone of size. I just wouldn't go over 600cc. Take the rider safety course. They give you 250cc bikes to ride.

Take the advice and go smaller first. Then move up when you feel confident. Better idea: take an MSF approved course. You'll learn the basics on a small bike, get a better idea of your ability and what kind of bike you really want. You also get exposed to experienced riders that you can talk to face-to-face.

2 - 3 weeks tops? You tryin' to make Bike week or something? Not a good idea.

Unless you are small and weak, don't buy a small bike. The standard go small advice applies to sportbikes, where the sheer power of a 600+cc bike can get you killed in a hurry if you don't know what you're doing. Cruisers don't have that kind of power, so don't get a small cruiser or you'll outgrow it quickly. Don't buy the 650! You'll hate it after a month. Get the 1100, which is still a small cruiser anyway. Also take the MSF course...

You should also take the Riders Safety Class. I learn on a 750 and now I have a V Star 1100 and I love it.

I agree with 'easygoing' - get a cheap 'beater' bike at first - that way you won't get too mad when you drop it (and you will). Get something that is easy to work on too, and you can cut down on your mechanic's bills, and learn a lot about bikes yourself.
Also, insurance will be waaaay cheaper on an old beater bike.
Once you are experienced, move on to something else - and by then, your choices may have changed from cruiser to something else...

If you buy a big bike that you want... you will be upset when you throw it down the road..........

buy a 250cc to 500cc bike & learn to ride... trade it in in a years time on the bike you want...
