Babe Ruth. As one of the other answers pointed out, numbers don't lie. Babe Ruth not only hit over 700 home runs and batted well over .300 for his career, he was a phenomenal pitcher as well. In fact, he won a word series game for the Boston Red Sox. Most people think of Ruth as an overweight cigar smoking womanizer, but in his younger days he was in fact the premier athlete of his generation.

Possibly, the MLB today is completely different than the MLB back in the early 1900s. Players are a lot bigger now and pitchers are a lot better too. If you took the Babe Ruth from the 20s and put him in the current MLB league, he might not be as good of a player. If you took Richie Sexson back to 1920, he would probably be great. However there is only one problem with this statement. Sexson is better now because he has a lot more. Better training, conditioning, etc. He has gotten better things then people could get back in Ruth's time. If Richie Sexson went back to the Babe's time, he wouldn't be as strong, fast, and overall not as good of a ball player.

Babe Ruth was an All-Star pitcher as well as hitter. They both were dominate in their era. Can't really compare different era's. Equipment was radically improved when Mr. Aaron played, conditions were much more difficult when the Babe played.

Overall Ruth was because he was a great pitcher as well as hitter.

As far as outfielders, Aaron was the better player. Aaron was a much better defensive player than Ruth was.

I'm going to have to go with Hank Aaron.... he willingly shared his fame and fortune with his family and community, while "The Babe" was an egocentric playboy who asked for a fee for signing autographs (in his later years) He was a fat lazy slob who just happened to be able to hit well, he had no other redeeming qualities, while Hank was a pillar of his community. (And still is).
