Hi everyone. I am breastfeeding my second child (6 weeks old) and I have developed a rather painful blocked duct on one of my breasts. I have been to the doctor and it is not mastitis, and she suggested to just keep on feeding from that side, hot showers, compresses, cabbage leaves etc. etc. My problem, however, is that I am doing all of this and it is not seeming to get better (about 4 days now, I know not a huge length of time, but enough when you are in pain!). I am trying to feed my daughter from the affected side as much as possible, but the other side is just becoming massively engorged all the time. I don't want to pump too much from the other side because I am afraid that it will just increase my production and therefore continue the problem, but if I don't empty it I run the risk of getting a blocked duct on that side too! Does anyone have any tips as to what I could do? I am at a bit of a loss :-(
Thank you everyone xx

#1 Go braless as much as possible
#2 If you can locate the hard duct that is blocked rub it while nursing
#3 Alternate pointing the baby's chin and nose at the blocked duct
#4 I swear this won't hurt, though I almost passed out when someone suggested it, it HONESTLY doesn't hurt. If you see a whitish lump coming out of your nipple break it with a pin and pull out as much as you can with tweezer, then express and pull any more that you can see. Honestly it doesn't really get better if you don't.

i have had this problem twice with my 2nd child. i fed more on the breast with blocked duct, but you really should be feeding the baby on both sides otherwise the other breast could get blocked as well. i also fed my son in a different position each time he nursed. if it doesn't get better within a week of seeing your dr. or it gets worse make call your dr again because it may have developed into mastitis. good luck...i feel your pain!

hey, i am b/feeding my 6 month old and have just had the same thing. hang in there! yes it is mastitis and if you dont quickly get onto it, it can get nasty very quickly. i have known friends to get completely disoriented with fevers, so act now!!! 1 get a little massager (vibrator if you like lol) and massage the area as often as you can handle it, towards the nipple, 2 keep feeding, sometimes breast pumps can make it worse!!! babies are the only ones who can drain the breast properly... i used pumps on my first with no probs, but with my 2nd, got mastitis really bad 3 most important!!!, for 30mins before feeding, place heat packs on your breast. warm facewasher, warm water bottle, whatever, just before your feed and during if possible.. 4 straight after the feed, put cold packs on!! try to keep on for hour or 2 if you can..... and yes the cabbage leaves are good.... 5 uncover both breast while feeding, and let the other drip free. yuk i know, but it really helps do all of this every feed for a full day, and i guarantee you will start to feel better! but remember, dont ignore your other one either as then you will suffer the same fate in that one... just try to empty the sore one first!! good luck from fellow sufferer

Point the baby's body towards the blocked duct when you are feeding. That will concentrate the most sucking force onto that duct and hopefully clear it out.

For example, if the clogged duct is on the left side of your left breast, hold the baby so that her legs are pointed around the left side of your body towards your back.

try masaging the area before during and after feeing from that side it may be painful but might clear the blockage.
