Consider what is known:
1. In the outer reaches of the Roman Empire, it was common for soldiers to be mercenaries hired from among the Germanic tribes.
2. These tribesmen worshipped Odhinn/Woden, the only Norse/Teutonic deity known to have received human sacrifices.
3. Human sacrifice to Odhinn was ordinarily done by first hanging someone, and then spearing them.
4. The Roman centurion at the crucifixion speared Jesus.
5. Tradition has it that his name was Longinius. There is reportedly a tomb of Longinius in Germany that claims its occupant crucified Jesus.
So . . . was he putting him out of his misery, or sacrificing him to Odhinn?
