The Chinese had the first handguns, "fire-spears" and handcannons, technically known as guns with a "canon lock". Da Vinci just designed a "Automatic Igniting Device for Firearms", a more sophisticated kind of matchlock.

"Employing the earlier Tang Dynasty era discovery of high-nitrate gunpowder, the earliest developments of the gun barrel and the projectile-fire cannon were found in Song Dynasty China. The first art depiction of the Chinese 'fire-lance' (a combination of a temporary-fire flamethrower and gun) was from a Buddhist mural painting of Dunhuang, dated circa 950 AD. These 'fire-lances' were widespread in use by the early 12th century, featuring hollowed bamboo poles as tubes to fire sand particles (to blind and choke), lead pellets, bits of sharp metal and pottery shards, and finally large gunpowder-propelled arrows. Eventually, perishable bamboo was replaced with hollow tubes of cast-iron, and so too did the terminology of this new weapon change, from 'fire-spear' ('huo qiang') to 'fire-tube' ('huo tong'). This ancestor to the gun was dually complimented by the ancestor to the cannon, what the Chinese referred since the 13th century as the 'multiple bullets magazine erupter' ('bai zu lian zhu pao'), a tube of bronze or cast-iron that was filled with about 100 lead balls. The Chinese also discovered the explosive potential of packing hollowed cannonball shells with gunpowder. Written later around 1350 in the Huo Long Jing of Jiao Yu, this manuscript recorded an earlier Song-era cast iron cannon known as the 'flying-cloud thunderclap eruptor' (fei yun pi-li pao)."

"The direct ancestor of the firearm is the fire-lance, which was a spear with a gunpowder-fueled flamethrower attached next to the spearhead; shrapnel was sometimes placed in the barrel so that it would fly out together with the flames. The earliest evidence of a gunpowder weapon anywhere in the world is probably the illustration of such a flamethrower on a tenth-century painted silk banner from northwest China; the earliest literary evidence of the use of fire-lances records that Chinese soldiers used fire-lances against the Jurchens at the siege of De'an in 1132. In due course, the proportion of saltpeter in the propellant was increased to increase its explosive power. To better withstand that explosive power, the paper and bamboo of which fire-lance barrels were originally made came to be replaced by metal. And to take full advantage of that power, the shrapnel came to be replaced by projectiles whose size and shape filled the barrel more closely. In a cave temple in Sichuan, there are sculptures dating from the 1100s of figures carrying weapons, in one case, a bomb, in another, a vase-shaped bombard with flames and a cannonball coming out of it; Chase suggests this is evidence that the earliest true firearms may date from as early as the first half of the 1100s. The oldest surviving firearm is a bronze gun discovered in Manchuria at the site of battles fought in 1287 and 1288, where gunpowder weapons were known to be used. With this, the three distinct features of the firearm are met: a barrel made of metal, the gunpowder used containing high level of nitrate, and the projectile totally occluding the muzzle so that the powder charge would exert its full potential in propellant effect."

The oldest surviving firearm is a bronze gun discovered in Manchuria at the site of battles fought in 1287 and 1288, where gunpowder weapons were known to be used. On archeology, the oldest cannon in China dates from 1298, as discovered recently with Chinese date inscribed 元大德二年 (1298) on the cannon. This is, however, similar to the bronze cannon of 1332, which also had its date inscription. Furthermore, the oldest existent bronze handgun is from the Heilongjiang archeological excavation, dated to 1288 AD."

"First mention of firearms in Russia is found in "Sofiiskii vremennik" chronicle, where it is stated that during the 1382 defense of Moscow from Tokhtamysh's Golden Horde, Muscovites used "tiufiaks" firearms (Russian: "тюфяки"; this word derives from Turkic "tüfeng", meaning "gun"), which were of Eastern origin."

"Around the late 1400s in Europe, smaller and portable hand-held cannons were developed, creating in effect the first smooth-bore personal firearm. As the centuries progressed, these hand-held cannons evolved into the flintlock rifle, then the breech loader and finally the automatic."

to shoot the cragon crangon in 1476 Crangon crangon (common names include brown shrimp, common shrimp and sand shrimp) is a commercially important species of shrimp fished mainly in the southern North Sea, although also found in the Irish Sea, Baltic Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea, as well as off much of Scandinavia and parts of Morocco's Atlantic coast. Adults are typically 30–50 mm (1¼–2 inches) long, although individuals up to 90 mm have been recorded. The animals have cryptic colouration, being a sandy brown colour, which can be changed to match the environment. They live in shallow water, which can also be slightly brackish, and feed nocturnally. During the day, they remain buried in the sand to escape predatory birds and fish, with only their antennae protruding. Over 37,000 tons of Crangon crangon were caught in 1999, with Germany and the Netherlands taking over 80% of this total.

The plans from DaVinci are the earliest recorded blue prints of a "hand cannon". A protoge of DaVinci's took the plans to be evaluated by a watch smith (where fine metal parts can be produced) in Germany.

About 500 years prior to DaVinci, the Chinese already had the technology of what we call, gunpowder for explosive purposes. However, they did not invent the gun, more or less they invented the cannon.

Well, gunpowder came from China, and so did the cannon, but I'm having trouble figuring out where the gun itself originated. However they definitely existed before Da Vinci.

The Chinese invented gunpowder. So it stands to reason that they invented rockets, and probably the first gun.

The Chinese discovered black powder and used a primitive form of flame throwers.
First guns appeared in Europe mid 13th century after they got black powder from the Chinese and noone knows who invented them. Da Vinci was born later.

The Arabs, Mongrels, Chinese and the Europeans all claimed to have invented the first gun. It was called the Hand Gonne or hand cannon. It was first seen around 1300 and was used until the early 1500's.

They were muzzle loaded and fired by touching a burning wick to a touch hole in the back.

There is no definitive inventor....for more info see:

I'm pretty sure it was the Chinese. The earliest guns were strips of metal with bands of metal holding them together as boring out a solid piece of metal was difficult then.

Leonardo drew the prototype and colonists began to mix his ideas with their own,the result of the idea was a gun,From China gunpowder was made. The cannon ( metal ) came from Germany. The Chinese also called these firearms "spears of fire."So, to answer your question, it wasn't only one country or person, but multiple countries,so I'd say both did efforts in making the First Gun.I'll give back up information:

*Chinese*:Gunpowder
German:Cannon or whole gun ( metal )
*DaVinci*:Blue-prints

Also,do note the Turks created the catapult and nothing related to the gun,in other words the catapult had nothing to do with creating gunpowder, cannons,or the blueprints.
