As more people in the evening are using broadband the contention is higher. Bt will not go over 20:1 contention. Most other ISP's have 40:1 or even 60:1. As I live in a rurual area I don't suffer much contention, but urban areas have this problem.
As your service says up to 8Mb, not guaranteed 8Mb. if you don't want any contention use cable.
If you do change don't user Talk Talk, you will regret it. Just do some research online about Talk Talk problems and contention.

DanielleM suggests going with TalkTalk. I signed up for their Broadband service on 31/03/2007 and am still waiting. After phoning them on an 0870 number I was told I want Option2 Option 3 Option2 Option3. Can you believe it. The call cost totally in excess of £3. Oh, theyve also had my MAC code for the second time. I feel I`m entering into a Mickey Mouse world

The main problem with nearly all providers, including the following:-
BT, Talk talk, orange, tiscali etc etc
Is that they connect you all to a hub, which is a device effected by the number of people on that hub. Simply becuase a hub SHARES the bandwidth (speed) that is available to all users connected to that hub.
To increase performance you need to find a provider who connect you to a switch (Bandwidth is not shared, every body gets the same).
the only provider i know who offer this is virgin media (formerly telewest). I regularly get 10mbit (1.15 megabyte) per second all the time

This is probably due to contention, the more users are on the less bandwidth you get. Any home broadband suffers from this as the number of users local to you increases. Business broadband services have lower contention rates, instead of sharing with 30 - 50 users, you are likely to only have to share with 5.

I`ve never noticed it, my connection speed is always fast :-) and I use BT Broadband also.
......ahhhh, but you have `brandband` lol
Also, did you not read the small print from BT? They say they will provide "up to" your speed, it`s not "Guaranteed".

this might nicely be a fashion mate which will paintings...one hundred% this works with all bt broadband routers inclusive of the domicile hub only swap off the domicile hub(or router) and unplug it from the wall socket, then anticipate around 30 seconds then plug it decrease back in and turn decrease back on(you will possibly desire to anticipate 30 seconds) in case you have the domicile hub,you will possibly desire to then press the instant association button on the decrease back of the domicile hub for 15 to twenty seconds(in case you dont have a house hub forget approximately approximately this area) then each and every of the lighting fixtures fixtures will flow off then look one by skill of one as quickly as each and every of the easy are lit then you definately can use the broadband agin and you will see a large progression on your velocity i sometimes use this methodology around as quickly as a week to furnish me optimal obtain speeds, the only draw back is it resets the hub telephones even even though it in straight forward terms takes 2 minutes to establish lower back so thats no longer too undesirable i might additionally propose a secret agent ware test, yet you have performed this provide this a flow and permit me understand if it works stable success mate

It's because when people come home from school and work they go onto the internet and it then slows down to compensate for all the extra people using it.
